Cooking is a talent, and not everyone is a natural chef— but that’s completely okay! Nowadays, with social media, we get inundated with fancy, overly complicated recipes that provide entertainment over practical value.
If you’re looking to get back to basics with a delicious, traditional recipe, then this is the one for you.
I’m not much of a baker— I prefer to cook. But, when I found this recipe, I knew I had to give it a go.
As the mother of two toddlers, I’m always looking for something fun and easy that we can all enjoy— and this dessert, known as ‘dump cake’, has definitely become a staple.
Yes, I know. The name ‘dump cake’ doesn’t immediately make your mouth water but give me a second to explain. Dump cakes were named after how they are made— which essentially consists of dumping the ingredients into a baking dish and calling it a day. The best kind of recipe, am I right?
If you’ve never had a dump cake, they’re often compared to cobblers, but as the Food Network explains, they’re “even easier” to make.
As mentioned, dump cakes are a great recipe for amateur chefs and toddler cooks. They are made by layering fresh (or canned) fruit, cake mix, and butter.
Although this particular recipe uses cherries and white cake mix, dump cakes are infinitely adaptable.
You can easily alter the taste by changing the fruit and flavor of cake.
For the most part, pineapples and cherries seem to be the go-to selections for this delicious dessert, but as WiseGeek explains, you can find other… unique options, as well.
Like this one, which combines rhubarb and strawberry gelatin.
Or this one (my personal favorite), a dump cake version of Black Forest Cake, made with cherries and chocolate cake mix.
The recipe we will be using today is the cherry dump cake recipe by Delish.
In addition to the cake and fruit, however, this one adds a little twist by incorporating a tasty layer of slivered almonds.
Ingredients
- Cooking spray, for pan
- 2 (20 oz) cans of cherry pie filling
- 1 box of yellow cake mix
- 1 cup of slivered almonds
- 3/4 cups (1.5 sticks) butter, sliced
- Breyer’s vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 and grease a 9″ x 13″ baking dish with cooking spray.
- Pour cherry filling into the baking dish, creating an even layer at the bottom.
- Pour the cake mix over the cherries, making sure they are completely covered.
- Scatter almonds evenly over the cake mix.
- Place pieces of butter evenly over the top.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the topping is golden.
- Let cool slightly, then scoop into serving bowls and top with vanilla ice cream.
- Enjoy!
The pieces of butter create a crispy, buttery top layer over a gooey mixture of sweet fruit.
You don’t need ice cream to enjoy it—but believe me, it makes it that much better.
