Steaming your veggies is a great way to keep it healthy in the kitchen and we’ve got the perfect method to do it.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 steamer insert/basket or metal colander
1 large pot (for boiling water)
We like to keep things cheap and simple, so if you’re looking for a great deal on a steamer insert, check this out here.
Just a note on using this steaming method – when steaming your veggies, it’s important to make sure the vegetables are lifted above the height of the water. You wanted steamed veggies, not soaked ones!
Let’s get started:
- Begin by separating your veggies by type. Because different vegetables have different cook times, this is a helpful tip to reach your ideal texture (see charts below for specific cook times).
- Fill a large cooking pot with roughly 1 inch of water. You really don’t need a lot of water here. You just want enough to get a strong steam going!
- Place your colander or steamer insert inside the pot and bring the water to boil. Whether you are using an insert or a colander, make sure that you aren’t also using a non-stick pot. The metal legs of the insert or colander can scratch and damage your pot.
- Place your veggies inside, cover with a lid, and cook to your preferred texture.
