It’s savory. It’s sweet. It’s slow-cooked to perfection. That’s right, we’re talking about slow-cooked root beer pulled pork sandwiches. This slow cooked recipe is a perfect choice for just about any occasion, whether it’s a family party or a get-together with friends—all you need is a slow cooker and four simple ingredients. The process is easy and the end result is a whole mound of delicious pulled pork that can be used in sandwiches, wraps or whatever else your heart desires. Here’s what you need to get started:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 to 5 lbs of pork shoulder
  • 1 cup of sliced onion
  • 12 oz root beer
  • 16 oz barbecue sauce
  • 1 to 2 tbs of cooking oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

First, take your pork shoulder and sear it on all sides in a large cast iron skillet with a little bit of cooking oil (maybe a tablespoon or two). Although this step isn’t necessarily required for the recipe to work, it adds another layer of smokiness and texture to your meat. Also make sure to slice up a cup’s worth of onion in this prep stage to be used shortly.

Next, take your seared meat and drop it into your slow cooker. With a knife, poke a few holes in the top of the roast so that it can breathe during the cooking process. Once that’s done, throw in your sliced onions.

Pour the root beer over the onions and pork shoulder and set your slow cooker to low for eight hours.

Once it’s done, pull the pork shoulder out and put it on a pan or in a tray so that it can cool off somewhat. Take your slow cooker and strain the remaining juices into a large bowl to be used later.

Using two meat forks, shred your now softened pork into little pieces and add it back into the slow cooker. Pour the strained juices and the 16 oz of barbecue sauce over the mixture and stir it all to combine.
