They may live in rural or urban areas, but they often choose to live off the grid or in a way that minimizes their reliance on outside resources.
Which means they make a lot of their own goods.
Homesteading can be a rewarding experience, but it’s also a lot of work.
Homesteaders need to be skilled in a variety of areas, including gardening, animal husbandry, carpentry, and sewing.
They also need to be prepared for the challenges of living off the grid, such as dealing with natural disasters and managing their waste.
Then, of course, there’s food.
Now, this smart woman named Melissa K. Norris, the owner of the YouTube channel Melissa K. Norris – Modern Homesteading is a 5th generation homesteader.
According to her, she will “teach you how to use modern homesteading to grow, preserve and cook your food using old-fashioned skill sets and wisdom to create a natural self-sufficient home…”
Her “No Fail Easy Homemade Mayonnaise” recipe is delicious.
According to her, making your own mayonnaise gives you the freedom to give your version its own unique flavor by choosing your personally picked ingredients.
Truth be told and also as mentioned by Melissa, store-bought mayonnaise often contains genetically modified ingredients like soybean oil and other soy-based products.
Patronizing store-bought products doesn’t align with her title as a homesteader that’s why she has decided to share this homemade mayonnaise recipe.
Required Ingredients:
- 1 Fresh Whole Egg
- 1 teaspoon Mustard (Choose your preferred type: yellow, brown, dijon, spicy, etc.) Adding mustard may seem unusual for a mayonnaise recipe, but its emulsifying properties help blend the liquid and oil, resulting in a thick texture.
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt (for enhanced flavor)
- 2 teaspoons Lemon Juice (An acid is necessary for the emulsification process. If you don’t have lemon juice, increase the amount of vinegar.)
- 1 teaspoon Vinegar (I recommend organic white distilled vinegar, but homemade apple cider vinegar works as well. You can find organic white vinegar at Azure Standard. First-time Azure customers can avail of a special discount.)
- 3/4 cup Oil (The primary ingredient that contributes to the taste. Read the section below for guidance on choosing the right oil.)

There is no need to be a kitchen expert. Just follow the instructions below.
Step Number 1: Start by cracking a fresh egg into a wide-mouth Mason jar.
Step Number 2: Into the jar, add the mustard, salt, lemon juice, and white vinegar.
Step Number 3: Pour the oil on top of the other ingredients and let it sit for a minute, allowing the ingredients to separate with the oil floating on the top.
Step Number 4: Carefully insert the immersion blender into the jar, ensuring it reaches the bottom.
Step Number 5: Switch on the immersion blender and keep it at the bottom until the mixture starts to emulsify.
Do not lift the blender until the mixture turns white and creamy, indicating proper emulsification.

Step Number 6: Slowly lift and lower the immersion blender, gradually incorporating the remaining oil until the mixture becomes thick, creamy, and completely emulsified.
Step Number 7: Seal the jar with a lid and store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Please refer to my tips on storing for further guidance.
