When we think of donuts, we instantly think of a sweet one, right?
Those soft donuts will glaze or filling that we love to pair with brewed coffee or those that we enjoy for dessert. But donuts can be savory, too! Don’t frown upon the thought of it yet. Hear us out.
Try these Potato Cheese Donuts!
This recipe will change your mind about donuts being just for dessert. You can have these as a snack or even a meal if you want to eat something light.
Ready to try these yummy goodies? Here are the ingredients:
- 2-3 Potatoes
- 4 tbsp water
- 1 tsp salt
- Pepper
- 3 tbsp potato starch
- Onion
- Mozzarella cheese
- 4 tbsp flour
- 2 Eggs
- Breadcrumbs
First, chop the potatoes into cubes ready for cooking.
In the video, you can see that they added water in a microwavable bowl and cooked the potato in the microwave three times in 3-minute intervals, and stirring the potatoes around each time to make sure the potatoes were cooked evenly. Alternatively, you can boil the potatoes on top of the stove.
Once the potatoes are cooked, it’s time to mash them.
Add the salt and pepper and mash the potatoes. Next, add the potato starch and mix thoroughly until the mashed potatoes start to look like dough. The starch creates that dough-like consistency, exactly what you’ll need for this recipe.
Cut the onions across because you’ll need to use them as rings.
Take out the perfect onion rings you can find. This will serve as your donut ‘mold.’ You can vary them in sizes as long as it’s thick enough to hold the donuts in shape.
Slice some mozzarella cheese into thin pieces.
Make sure they are as thick as the onion rings that you have. You can also use mozzarella cheese slices from the grocery, so it will be easier to slice them. Place the cheese on the inner side of the onion ring.
Get a Teflon sheet and kitchen gloves to start forming your donuts.
Knead your potato dough a bit and roll it into thin strips. Wrap the dough around the onion ring and cheese and press lightly to form your donut. You can get more of the dough until the onion ring is completely covered. Do this with the rest of the onion rings.
Place the flour, two eggs, and breadcrumbs on three separate bowls.
Dip and coat the donuts in those three in that exact order. Make sure that every part of your donut is covered and coated evenly. Again, do the same with the rest of the donuts.
Get a deep pan and set it to medium heat.
Place enough oil for deep frying and wait for the oil to get hot. Once the oil is hot enough, it’s time to fry some donuts! Cook them until they’re golden brown, then turn to the other side. Remember not to turn them over too much, or it will damage the shape of your donut.
