For the burger lovers out there, what’s your favorite side? Would it be an unpopular answer to say the onion rings?
Although many people enjoy onion rings, those are quite underestimated and they often come after the classic potato fries or coleslaw.
It seems that the history of onion rings is so old that it’s actually lost, although we know that the first known recipe seems to come from a British cookbook dating back to 1802. Crazy, right?
The delicious fast-food side combines sweet and savory flavors and it is the perfect burger condiment. Still, there are people who don’t like them. Why could that be?
Well, unfortunately, some big fast-food chains deep-fry rings formed from a paste made of processed onions, or even worse, powdered onions. This concoction is barely edible and it explains why so many fast-food lovers are reluctant to try them.
Today we are bringing to you the perfect, most delightful onion rings. And they’re not alone- they’re bringing their mozzarella friends along!
In the recipe below, onions and cheese are combined to bring to us the most decadent flavor, the yummiest rings you’ve ever tasted.
And on top of that, they’re extremely easy to make. You won’t need any fancy ingredients or fancy equipment. With stuff you already have on hand, you can impress your family and friends- and, why not? even yourself- and have them ask for more.
You’ll just need to slice the onions and cheese, put them together in a round shape, coat and fry them. Now, how easy was that? Basic ingredients, basic tools, and just a few minutes to put everything together. Doesn’t that sound like the ideal snack, really?
So, let’s see what you’ll need to prepare them at home.
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup Mozzarella cheese
- 1 Onion
- 1/4 cup Flour
- 1/2 cup Bread crumbs
- 2 Eggs
- Cooking oil
First, you need to slice the onion crosswise.
Separate the layers of the onion and place them on your countertop.
Take a piece of mozzarella cheese and slice it into thin slices. Take an onion piece and line it on the inside with the cheese. add one more layer of onion on the inside. Continue with all the onion slices.
Put the finished slices on a cooking tray- ideally, lined with parchment paper- and put it in the freezer for one hour. Make sure you don’t skip this step because the cheese will melt immediately once it goes in the fryer if you do.
When the rings are frozen, prepare the fryer using cooking oil and bringing it to the right temperature (350-450F).
Take each ring and dip it in flour, making sure you dust off any excess. Then, dip it in the beaten eggs, and continue with the breadcrumbs. For an extra layer of crunchiness, repeat the dipping in eggs and breadcrumbs one more time.
Then fry until golden brown.
You will end up with the most delicious onion rings ever! Plus, the cheesy surprise will have everyone ask for more!
Make sure to keep this recipe for your next gathering because it will definitely steal the show and the chef- aka you- will be praised! Who doesn’t want that, right?
