Sometimes, it can feel as though there aren’t a lot of “good” people out there. We shouldn’t lose hope, however. You can find plenty of kind and caring people in the world if you look hard enough.
One such person is a plumber by the name of James Anderson.
His kind actions towards a client have caused the whole world to just fall in love with the guy.
James is a 52-year-old father of 5 children. He launched a for-profit plumbing business not long ago but then would re-launch it as a non-profit.
His organization is called Disabled & Elderly Plumbing & Heating Emergency Repairs (D.E.P.H.E.R )
Although James has helped many people with his work, it was what he did for one client, in particular, that has people praising him.
James didn’t charge this client a single cent.
She was an older woman, 91 years of age, and living with acute leukemia. The invoice Mike left her showed that no charge was owed.
“No charge for this lady under any circumstances. We will be available 24 hours to help her and keep her as comfortable as possible,” he wrote.
The act of kindness went viral and was shared all over the world.
This shocked James, who said he did not expect it.
“We didn’t expect it. It’s been everywhere,” James said of the response to his actions.
What James did for the woman in this story is exactly what he started his non-profit to do. He was motivated to start a non-profit organization when he saw another elderly woman taken advantage of by an engineer. He wanted to do something to help, to cause a change in the industry.
So, James has been offering plumbing services for people in need for free or at a reduced cost through his non-profit organization.
James has gone into debt because of this work. He’s not worried about it, however.
“A lot of people close to me ask: ‘why are you getting yourself into debt? Why are you doing this?’” He said. “To me, debt is debt… I would rather owe some money to somebody and another person be alive and happy and safe.”
When he first started his non-profit, James’ goal was to expand it all across the country. He says he’d still like to do that too.
“I’ve spoken to quite a few engineers around the country and they’re all for it… it’s just getting the funding. I don’t want any person who is elderly and disabled in this country, in this day and age, to die or suffer because of a cold home or a lack of funding to repair the boiler,” he said.
“It shouldn’t be happening — that number should be down to zero. Simple as that,” James added.
When James’ story went viral, inspired people were motivated to donate.
He raised $100,000 from people who were touched by his work and this story in particular. Now, all of his hard work is paying off and he can continue to do this important work for people in need. He can also pay off his debts!
This is a tale of one person’s good actions coming around back to them, and just what can happen when you choose to practice kindness and have a little faith.
