They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. With that said, however, how many people are really going around and picking up trash and turning it into something exceptional?
The king-sized headboard in this story was given a drastic makeover that prevented it from ending up spending the rest of its existence in a landfill.
The man in this story went full Frankenstein on a piece of wood that many would have never given a second glance if they saw it on the curb on trash day.
He transformed the headboard into a beautiful French-chic looking reading room chair.
Perhaps you are someone that can’t even separate recyclables from your trash. Maybe you’ve never taken on a DIY project such as this. Artist Mike Macon may be able to help.
Mike is the owner of Hanceville, Alabama’s “Just Repurposed” store. He wants to show people just how easy it can be to turn objects destined for landfills into useful and stylish furniture.
This worn-down, crusty, old, and useless king-sized headboard seemingly had no value.
Its beautiful wood is very valuable, however, and people like Mike know how to make good use of it.
As we approach the holidays, our budgets often tighten when it comes to purchasing things for ourselves. That’s why we should all look for ways to save money as much as possible.
So, why would anyone buy new furniture when there is plenty of wood just lying around that can be crafted into something new?
The headboard that Mike would turn into a beautiful chair was originally part of a vintage sleigh bed. Had Mike not salvaged the item, it would have gone to a landfill.
Mike measured out his entire project, careful to be as precise as possible.
He then cut the headboard into 3 parts.
Mike used the 3 pieces to create the side arms and back to the chair. He added a wooden platform to be used for the seat, and wooden beams in the back for support.
Mike then screwed everything together and things started to really take shape!
Next up, Mike needed to make the chair look nice. After it was constructed, he added a coat of “Driftwood” paint. He used a special kind of paint called Dixie Belle Paint for the job.
Dixie Belle Paint has a line of chalk mineral-based paints. The advantage of these kinds of paints is that they eliminate the need for sanding, priming, sealing, or prepping the wood.
There are over 60 colors of Dixie Belle Paints to choose from and Mike’s decision here really brought the project together.
This king-sized headboard has been transformed into a beautiful chair.
DIY and repurposing projects like this really allow you to be creative. To do it well, you have to be able to see the finished project from the hunk of scraps you start with.
Most art projects are like that, however. You start with a blank canvas and hopefully end up with something beautiful to look at.
The person who threw out the headboard saw it as “garbage” but Mike saw what it could become instead.
What one person saw as trash, Mike saw as treasure. Upcyclers like him don’t just improve on the function of the object, they can make them nice to look at as well!
