It’s a nice feeling whenever we get to help other people. When you extend a helping hand to someone who needs it, you make them happy and at the same time, it also makes you feel happy!
It turns out that there’s a scientific explanation behind this rewarding feeling.
It’s called the Helper’s High
It’s the term for that gratifying feeling whenever you perform charitable deeds and acts of kindness. According to Project Helping, our bodies release something called endorphins – chemicals that help us cope with stress, or boost our moods and immunity whenever we help someone or do something good.
It’s uplifting to know that lots of people willingly do something nice for other people without expecting anything in return.
Ruth Reed is one of these people.
She and her husband just love to help others, especially veterans. It has been their habit to treat strangers by paying their tabs in Wawa or sometimes in Dunkin’ Donuts. All of these things just make them happy, especially Ruth. In fact, it was a new year’s resolution that she made years ago.
The retired elementary school teacher did not expect that her kindness would lead her to encounter a megastar, though.
One day when Ruth was in Wawa, a man who was ahead of her in a line was getting ready to pay his bill.
It turned out that he was short of cash. Ruth knew that she had to do what she has been doing for other people, so she immediately said, “I’ve got it”.
The man tried to refuse but couldn’t beat Ruth’s eagerness to help. So, the former teacher paid for it without knowing that she was about to get an unexpected surprise from that man.
They had the chance to talk and introduce themselves to each other. Ruth had already noticed that the man seemed familiar but she did not know who he really was.
Turns out, he’s Keith Urban, the mega country music star.
When Keith told Ruth who he really was, she did not believe him. She just couldn’t. For her, there was no reason for Keith to be in her favorite convenience store.
Eventually, she realized that the guy who she just helped was telling the truth, but only after his bodyguards attested to it.
Ruth was still in awe but she tried to compose herself. She even managed to ask for a photo with the famous musician.
Of course, Keith did not refuse. They have the cutest photo!
Aside from that unforgettable experience and a lovely photo of them, a lot of good things happened to Ruth after her encounter with the star.
It also made her a star.
She turned into an internet sensation because of what happened. She was interviewed by CBS News and she also appeared on the Pickler & Ben show, hosted by Kellie Pickler and Ben Aaron.
In that interview, Ruth gladly recounted her story with Keith. It made the hosts of the show, as well as the audience, laugh out loud. It is indeed a hilarious story!
Aside from that, it’s undeniably inspiring. It’s great how that unexpected meeting let a lot of people know about Ruth’s kindness- and just how much it can pay off in life.
