Is there anything more befitting for summertime food fare than a delicious BBQ burger? The answer is no. No, there isn’t.

Of course, what’s a good burger without all the tasty fixin’s? Ketchup, mustard, mayo, onion, lettuce, and tomato. And we can’t forget the king of them all – pickles.

But did you know that there are other toppings you can make to decorate your grub that are just out of this world and bursting with flavor?

Well, let us tell you about our beautiful friend – the cabbage.

Now, we know a lot of you out there say that you can’t stand this magical veggie – but might we suggest that you just haven’t had it the right way yet?

These gorgeous greens (and purples) make fantastic meals when paired with ingredients that draw out their unique flavors, and we’ve found just the recipe for you!

What kicks this mealtime greatness off is a genius food hack that involves 3 simple things- a beer can, a head of cabbage, and a bbq.

Okay, well there’s just a little more to it than that, but really not much.

First, you’ll start by coring out your cabbage and setting aside the core for later.

Any kind of cabbage will do, but there are zero doubts that purple or red cabbage will give your burgers a mouthwatering burst of color.

Once you’ve cored your cabbage, you’ll take your can of beer, cabbage, and some BBQ sauce out to your grill.

Open up your beer (you can take a quick sip if you want) and then place your cabbage over the can, pushing down to make sure it’s on there nice and snugly, but not so tight you can’t pull it back out again.

Situate your can-propped cabbage in the center of your grill over hot coals.

Now it’s time to play a little arts and crafts with your beer can cabbage.

Take a basting brush and your favorite BBQ sauce and heavily brush it all over your cabbage.

Make sure it’s completely covered.

After you’ve got even coverage, put the lid on the grill and let it cook for 30 minutes.

When you open it up to pull it out, this glorious sight will be awaiting you.

After your 30 minutes is up, carefully remove the beer can cabbage with heatproof gloves and take it to your cutting board.

Remove the cabbage from the beer can (it should slip right off), and cut it into quarters to get 4 large wedges.

Then, turn each wedge on its side and chop the cabbage up into bite-sized chunks.

After you’ve chopped your cabbage, put it in a bowl large enough to hold all of it with a little extra room for mixing. A medium-sized bowl should work just fine.

Next, throw in about ½ a cup of BBQ sauce and mix it all together.

Then, you’ll pile this BBQ cabbage goodness onto the bottom portion of your burger bun.

Pro Tip: toast your buns for a slightly crunchy bite and to avoid soggy bread.

Now, we are no one to tell you how to arrange the flavors of your burger, but if you’re looking for something new to try with a true Southern BBQ flavor, you can’t go wrong with these instructions.

After your cabbage is piled onto your bun, top it off with a fresh, juicy burger, your favorite cheese, and a few jalapeños.

Then, grab the core of your cabbage, a large carrot, and a small purple onion.

Chop up the core into ¼-½” sized chunks, shred the carrot, and finely dice the onion.

Throw all of it into another medium-sized container and top with about ½ a cup of mayo, 1 – 2 Tblsp. of apple cider vinegar, and 1 – 2 Tblsp. of honey.

Add salt and pepper to taste, then mix everything together.
