Puff pastries are one of the most flexible dishes there is.
Known for its flaky, crisp dough, you can whip up an appetizer or dessert with it, depending on what you fill the dough with.
However, the one thing home cooks don’t like about puff pastry? It can be tedious to make.
Sure, we can buy phyllo dough from the store, but it tastes better if you make your own.
This cook found an easier way to make puff pastries (a.k.a. phyllo dough).
This is perfect for the upcoming holidays where this delectable pastry would surely come in handy.
Here are the ingredients:
- 3.5 oz. water
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup butter
- 2 cups bread flour
- ½ cup extra dry butter or pastry shortening (vegan)
First, mix the salt with water and stir thoroughly.
Next, place butter in a bowl.
Stir until the butter softens. Add the bread flour and mix. Pour in the saltwater solution, and continue mixing. Once the mixture starts to thicken, you can knead it with your hand.
Knead the dough into a ball, leave it in a bowl, cover, and leave for ten minutes.
After ten minutes, knead the dough again and prepare to roll it. Use a rolling pin to form the dough into a flat, rectangular shape.
The size should be around 10×12 inches should be less than a quarter-inch thin.
Place and spread the extra dry butter on the dough.
Dry butter has more fat and less water content, so it is stiff and won’t easily melt at room temperature. This is used in making puff pastry to have the same consistency and temperature as the pastry dough.
For this step, you can use a spatula (and assisted with your hand) to spread it evenly throughout the dough.
Fold the dough into thirds and roll out so it’s 17 ½-inch long.
Cut a small part on both ends so your dough will look neater.
Fold the dough in equal thirds again.
Cover and leave it for another ten minutes. Dust the dough with a bit of flour, and follow the same steps.
After you’ve folded it into thirds once more, dust it with flour but this time roll it into 24×12 inches.
Cut both ends, then slice into three even sheets.
Now your dough is ready for any pastry you like.
You can cut one sheet into four and fill each with a jam of your choice. Then, fold the dough into a triangular shape.
Make sure to create small slits on one side of the dough to make an evenly-baked puff pastry.
Place all your filled pastries in a baking pan lined with a sheet.
Brush egg yolk on top of the pastry and sprinkle with sugar.
Preheat your oven to 410 degrees Fahrenheit, then bake for 20-30 minutes. You now have these mouthwatering, crispy puff pastries.
This method makes it so much easier to make your own. You can whip up some sweet and tasty pastries over the holidays in less time (and hassle).
