Who doesn’t love waffles?

If you’re paying attention to what’s going on in the kitchen, you know that waffles are exactly the same as pancakes.

What sets them apart is how you cook them. Waffle uses waffle makers that make them crispy yet fluffy all at the same time.

And while you can use ready-to-mix pancake brands, there really isn’t room to adjust the taste and texture.

John Kanell from Preppy Kitchen teaches his viewers how to make the perfect waffle.

This dish is so simple even a kid could do it with minimal guidance. But it is this simplicity that makes the dish complicated.

Kanell’s recipe only requires 8 ingredients but how much of each do you need to make the perfect bacon companion? What little adjustments can you make to create the best-tasting waffle?

First, preheat your waffle iron.

A lot of people skip this step and just dunk the batter in. By pre-heating the iron, you can surely get a crispy brown exterior and a fluffy interior.

In a large bowl, mix in 2 and ¼ cups of flour (270g), a tablespoon of baking soda, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and ¼ cup (50g) of sugar. If you’re using salted butter, reduce your salt by a third.

Melt ½ a cup or half a stick of butter. You can also use vegetable oil. Then, combine your wet ingredients. Whisk together 2 large eggs, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, 2 cups of milk (480 ml), and the melted butter.

Then, combine your wet and dry ingredients together.

Whisk your mixture until it turns into the batter. Be careful not to over-mix your batter. If there are small lumps, you can leave them be. It will disappear when you cook them in your waffle iron.

Scoop up around a third of a cup of batter and drop it onto the center of the waffle maker.

The size of the waffle depends entirely on your maker so you might need to experiment a bit for this one.

You can lessen the batter a bit to stop it from spreading fully. This can give you circular waffles. If you want them square, you can put just enough for the batter to reach the edge.

Cooking times depend on the waffle maker too.

Some can have them around 5 minutes, some a bit longer, and some a bit shorter. But Kenall shared a rule of thumb.

Once the batter starts cooking you’ll see tons of steam pipe out from the waffle maker. When the steam dissipates and disappears, that means the waffle is ready.

He also shared some other pro tips.

He said you can cook up a whole batch of waffles and freeze them. You can just whip them out, toss them into the toaster, and enjoy that crispy breakfast treat.

He also said that after cooking, don’t pile them up together like some kind of waffle hoard. Waffles release steam as it rests, which can make the other waffle go softer.
