Thereâs no downside to staying healthy and fixing our regular diets to help us achieve the best version of ourselves physically.
But letâs all admit it. Itâs really difficult to cut out sugar. Especially for those who love desserts, fighting against the temptation takes so much work that we only wish it counts as cardio.
This also doesnât mean that there are no healthier options.
The YouTube channel Fantastic Recipes showed how much we could do with just dried fruits and nuts. Read down below and see how one content creator reimagined the humble trail mix.
For this recipe, youâll need an assortment of dried fruits. For this one, they used dried cranberries, apricots, plums, and raisins. These fruits should be around 130g in total.
Youâll also need 20g of fast-dissolving gelatin, 50g of walnuts, 50g of peanuts, 50g of pumpkin seeds, 350g of cottage cheese, and 80g of yogurt. Did you notice that we donât have sugar? Set that one aside because we donât need it!
First, soak the dried fruits in water for around 15 to 20 minutes.
This will help wash out preservatives and hydrate the fruits a little bit. Spread a couple of pads of paper towel on a surface.
Drain the water and place the fruits on the paper towel. Cover the fruits with a towel and let them dry. Once dry, cut the fruits into smaller bits so you can incorporate them easily and evenly later on.
Next, dissolve the gelatin in 100g of water.
Set that one aside. Meanwhile, roast the nuts in a pan. Stir and toss occasionally to prevent them from burning. Set the nuts aside as well.
In a large bowl, combine your cottage cheese and yogurt. Mix them well using a hand blender. Melt the gelatin you set aside a while ago.
Scoop around two tablespoons of the cheese mixture and stir it into the liquefied gelatin.
Then, pour the mixture into your bowl of cheese and yogurt. Mix the cheese once more with a hand blender. The gelatin will help hold the entire thing together.
Add your fruits, nuts, and seeds to the bowl. Mix them together using a ladle. Once all the ingredients are properly combined, scoop the mixture carefully and place it over a sheet of saran wrap.
Make sure you shape the mixture into a thick line.
Roll the saran wrap like how youâd do it with sushi. It should look like a tube by now. Twist the ends of the saran wrap tightly to make sure that the mixture will hold its shape.
Refrigerate for 2 hours. Once ready, unwrap your treat and slice it. This dessert is a perfect source of fiber, protein, natural sugars, and essential fats. Howâs that for eating healthy!
Other commenters shared their adjustments to the recipe.
âWash the dry fruit, then soak in either vodka or rum. Leave in the fridge overnight, then discard fruit and drink liquid.â Said one.
âI make something similar but instead of milk products I use peanut butter and honey mixed with rolled oats as the binder.â Another one said, sharing their version for those who are lactose intolerant.
