Woman has her favorite fudge recipe chiseled into her headstone
It's an unexpected location for a recipe, to say the least.

We all want to leave some sort of legacy. It’s nice to have something that we are remembered by and can share with those who are special to us even after we are gone.

For Kathryn, who went by Kay for short, that included sharing something with more than just her closest friends and family. She wanted to leave behind the recipe for her famous fudge when she died.

Maybe Kay only intended it to reach the people who visited her grave and to give them something comforting. However, thanks to the internet, pictures of her famous fudge recipe have been shared far and wide.

Kay’s fudge recipe has gone viral.

Kay’s Fudge

It’s an unusual sight, a gravestone with a recipe on one side. It would be hard not to notice.

It also turns out that it is a really good recipe for the perfect fudge!

We had to wonder how the recipe found its way to that headstone, and then we discovered that there’s a story behind it.

The idea

According to East Idaho News, when Kay’s husband died, she wanted to have something engraved on their shared headstone that would commemorate his life. Her children suggested that she do something that came from her as well.

That was when she decided that the thing she wanted to share most was her fudge recipe.

Seeing it go viral

Kay actually had a chance to see photos of the recipe being shared before she passed on herself, nineteen years after her husband.

It was a good feeling to know that her legacy was living on in kitchens everywhere. She had already made a positive – and delicious – impact on the world while she was still living.

That’s something that many of us don’t get to experience.

Bringing back memories

The story of the headstone and what it shared inspired others to talk about family recipes, loss, and what we leave behind.

One of the people commenting on YouTube had this to say:

“…It makes me think of my mom and the loss of a beloved recipe. It was a delicious ‘coffee cake’ but nothing like the traditional cake. I live with the regret of not asking her for the recipe sooner, because when I did she had completely forgotten it… I was so shocked. I still have the memory of how it tasted but not a clue how to recreate it. (I have tried and can’t get it right.)”
