What you think are just some kitchen scraps can actually be pretty useful around the house. So, you may want to start hanging onto your citrus and banana peels.
Here are some of the best uses for them around your home.
Hair Spray
Put the peels of one lemon inside a bowl and pour a boiling cup of water over it. Let it seep for a few hours. Toss out the peels and pour it into a spray bottle along with a tablespoon of vodka. You can use it as a hairspray on wet or dry hair.
Body Scrub
Dry some lemon and orange peels in the sun. Take about 10 to 20 grams of the peels and grind them up. Mix this with some oatmeal, add some yogurt, milk or honey and rub it on your skin to exfoliate and rinse with lukewarm water.
Remove Glassware/Silverware Spots
Add a few lemon rinds to your dishwasher cycle to prevent spots from forming on your glass and silverware.
Nail Whitener
Rub a lemon peel on your fingernails to restore yellowed or discolored nails to their natural color.
Fade Skin Blemishes With Bleaching Cream
You can mix 3 grams of ground lemon peels with a little bit of oatmeal, some turmeric powder and three pinches of salt. Blend with some petroleum jelly and apply on your face, arms or blemished areas. Let it sit on your face for 10 minutes before rinsing it off.
Coffee Pot Residue
Add lemon peels, a cup or two of ice and a few tablespoons of salt to a cool coffee pot and swirl it around to remove all the residue in your coffee pot. This will have it looking brand new.
Keep Your Garbage Disposal Smelling Fresh
Grind some citrus peels in your garbage disposal to keep your garbage disposal from stinking.
Cleaning Sponge
Rub a lemon peel or half all over your oven, counter, and stovetops to cut through grease. You can even use one to remove hard water stains in the bathroom. You can use some salt if you need some scrubbing action.
Wart Removal
Rub the inside of a banana peel over your wart and keep it in place with strapping tape overnight. Remove it in the morning and repeat for ten nights until the wart falls off.
Acne
Rub a small piece of the inside of a banana on acne prone areas and rub the area with the peel until the area turns brown. Let the banana residue sit for about 30 minutes before your rinse. Do this two to three times a day. the fatty acids and antioxidants can reduce inflammation and soothe a breakout.
Soothe An Itch
You can soothe the itch from a bug bite by rubbing the inside of a banana peel on the bite to reduce itching, irritation, and swelling.
Teeth Whitening
The potassium, magnesium, and manganese in a banana peel will help whiten your teeth if you rub it the inside of one of your teeth for two minutes.
Shine Shoes
Buff your shoe with the inside of a banana peel then with a clean dry cloth.
Aphid Control
You can bury some banana peels around your roses, cauliflower, or other plants that attract aphids. The banana peels will deter them.
Dry Skin
Use a banana peel to cure a dry patch of skin by rubbing the inside of it over your dry patch twice a day until your skin is no longer scaley.
