Sometimes the appetizers are the best part of holiday get-togethers.
Appetizers are a great way to showcase your culinary creativity while offering something savory, sweet, or both.
Appetizers are served in most cultures according to 158 Main. The holidays present the perfect time to show off your best appetizer recipes.
But it’s also fun to try new ones.
If you’re looking for a new holiday appetizer recipe, look no further. Say goodbye to boring pigs in a blanket.
This is a slightly elevated version of the beloved classic hors d’oeuvre.
This recipe uses bread as a blanket and sausages as “the pig.” You could also use full sizes hot dogs instead.
You basically make a cannoli shell out of the bread by folding its opposite corners and securing the slice with a toothpick. Mix olive oil and oregano together.
Paint your bread with this mixture then put it in the oven.
Mix cheese, garlic, and mayo and spread on the toasted bread shells.
Then you cook sausages and cut them in half once they are done cooking.
You then plop in the sausage half on top of the cheese mixture inside the bread shell.
It’s sort of like an herby hot dog taco.
You can also drizzle it with some mustard or put some out for dipping.
Ingredients
- 8 slices of bread
- 2 tbs. of olive oil
- 1 tbs. oregano
- 1.5 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 cups of mayonnaise
- 1 clove of garlic
- 4 sausages
Step 1 ) Go over eight slices of white bread with a rolling pin so they flatten out.
Step 2) Fold the opposite sides of each slice over one another so that there is a tunnel in the middle and your slice looks like a cannoli shell. Run a toothpick through the folded over edges so that your bread shell keeps it shape.
Step 3) Place your bread shells on a baking sheet that is topped with parchment paper.
Step 4) Mix a tablespoon or two with oregano and brush the mixture over your pieces of bread.
Step 5) Place the baking sheet into an oven that is preheated to 220ºC or 428ºF and cook for 5 to 19 minutes.
Step 6) Pour some olive oil over a cheese grater to grease it. Then use it to shred about 100 to 150 grams or half a cup of cheddar cheese. Grate a clove of garlic onto your shredded cheese.
Step 7) Mix in two cups of mayonnaise into your cheese and garlic mixture.
Step 8) When 5 to 10 minutes have passed, take your bread shells out of the oven to cool.
Step 9) Use a knife to spread your cheese and mayo mixture into each bread shell.
Step 10) Cook four sausages in a pan. You can run a skewer through your sausages to help get them to cook evenly on all sides.
Step 11) When the sausages are fully cooked and slightly browned on the outsides take them off the stove and let them cook down. Slice them down the middle and stuff your bread shell with them on top of the cheese spread.
Step 12) You can drizzle the pieces of the hot dog that are exposed with thin lines of mustard if you prefer. Or you can leave some out for dipping.
Don’t they look divine?
