There’s just something about home-made southern foods that makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. Never would I have imagined that it’d be so easy to make good southern food right at home. Today, I will share with you a recipe that’ll be sure to impress all your friends and family and feed the comfort of their souls. You’ll learn how to make southern-style smothered pork chops and gravy in the slow cooker in less than 20 minutes prep time! It’s such an effortless, yet exquisite meal. The hardest part of the recipe will be to wait for the slow cooker to work its magic while you drool over the smell.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • 2 lbs pork chops
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup half & half
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon celery flakes

First, season the pork chops with 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Toss the all purpose flour and the pork chops into a large freezer bag. Shake the bag until the pork chops are well coated. Remove the pork chops from the bag and shake off the excess flour, but be sure to reserve the excess flour in a bowl. You will need this later.

Put a skillet on medium high heat and pour out the vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, start adding in the pork chops. Fry each side for about 30 seconds, then remove from the oil and put it aside. Once all of the pork chops are fried, toss in the onions into the same skillet and fry them until they are translucent. Sprinkle in that leftover flour and cook until it until it turns brown. Pour in the chicken broth and the half & half, while continuously stirring the mixture in order to avoid lumps. Add in the garlic, celery flakes, and the remaining salt and pepper. Stir for another 2~3 minutes, or until all of the ingredients have meshed together. Then turn the heat off.

Place the pork chops into the slow cooker and then smother the gravy over it. Place the lid on the slow cooker, and cook on high. 3 hours later, you’ll have yourself a hearty, warm delicious meal that’ll make your friends and family want seconds!
