As the saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Although not all of us have an appetite in the morning, it’s good to at least get something down—and it helps if it tastes absolutely delicious. Although the classic options of eggs and toast can be good, they can also get old after a while. Sometimes, you want something a little sweeter and more decadent. And that’s exactly what we have for you today.

That’s right, today we’re going to make a cinnamon french toast, casserole-style. And best of all? We’re going to make it in a slow cooker. The actual bread itself you can buy from the store and use as your base before pouring in some extra ingredients to make it all the more creamy and delicious. Although you’re not going to win any health awards for this recipe, it’s guaranteed to make your mouth water. At the very least, you could just save it for a special occasion, right? Let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 loaf of cubed cinnamon swirl bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups of half-and-half
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons of rum (optional)
  • 3/4 cups of chopped walnuts
  • 3/4 cups of raisins (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt

Here’s what you do:

1. To start, take your loaf of cinnamon bread and chop it into cubes. Leave it out overnight so it turns stale as well.

2. After that, get out your slow cooker and coat the inside with a non-stick cooking spray. Drop your bread cubes in so that they completely cover the bottom of it.

3. Next, get a large bowl out and add your eggs, half-and-half, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and rum (if you’re using it). Whisk everything until it’s well-combined and then pour it all over your bread evenly, making sure it covers it all.

4. Once that’s done, sprinkle your chopped walnuts on top of everything along with your raisins. As some people don’t like raisins with their cinnamon bread, feel free to leave these out as well. After everything is in, put the lid back on and set it to cook for three to four hours on high or six to eight hours on low.

5. When the time’s up, open it up and make sure the liquid has been absorbed into the bread and everything looks creamy and delicious. Scoop some out into a bowl and serve it while it’s hot!

As you can see, making this recipe is incredibly simple and the results are delicious. Though you don’t have to use rum or raisins if you don’t want to, they do and an additional punch of flavor. Another variant of this recipe is to leave out the raisins and the walnuts and sub in chocolate chips. At the end of it all, it’s up to you whether to serve with maple syrup on top as well… but we know what we’d do. At any rate, enjoy this recipe and let us know how it goes!
