Sandwiches are one of the most versatile and easy meals there are out there—and all of us probably have our own favorites. On the easy end of things, you can throw some cold cuts and cheese on bread and have it for lunch. To put a little more effort in, you might make a grilled cheese sandwich. Still, there’s an entire upper echelon of gourmet sandwiches that we usually have to go to a restaurant to get one. Of this category, one of the fancier ones has to be the French dip sandwich.

As it turns out, you can make this delectable, meaty treat right at home with the recipe we’re about to show you today. In fact, this sandwich can actually be made using a slow cooker! Today, we’re going to making simple and delicious French dip sandwiches that take almost no effort to throw together. Once you give this recipe a shot, you’re guaranteed to come back to it again and again. So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 packages of au jus mix
  • 2 packages of Italian dressing mix
  • 32 ounces of beef broth
  • 5 pounds of top or bottom round beef roast
  • 8 hoagie buns
  • 8 slices of provolone cheese

Here’s what you do:

1. Before getting started with anything else, make sure to spray down your slow cooker with some non-stick cooking spray. After that, drop your beef roast into the pot and sprinkle it with the au jus mix and the Italian dressing mix.

4. Next, slice your roast beef up into thin slices and load it into your hoagie rolls along with a slice of provolone (or more, if you’d like). Wrap the sandwiches in some aluminum foil and preheat your oven to 400 degrees. When it’s ready, pop the sandwiches in and let them cook for about 10 minutes.

5. When the time is up, take your sandwiches out and you’re ready to eat! As we said before, now is a good time to use that broth you saved as a dipping sauce.

Although there are restaurants that specialize in the cooking of French dip sandwiches, the truth is that they mostly just seem fancier than they actually are. As you can see from the recipe above, the same results can be had with very little effort right at home. Although the beef will cost you a little bit of money no matter how you slice it (pun intended), the taste is sure to be just as delicious as anything you’d get elsewhere.

Once you’ve made this a few times, feel free to experiment with some of the seasonings and add in your own sauces at the end as you see fit. Above all, have fun with this recipe and let us know how it turns out!
