When is the last time you made a loaf of banana bread? Whenever you buy a batch of bananas and a few of them get too overripe, chances are you make some dough out of them and bake it in the oven rather than just throw it all away. There are plenty of different ways to make banana bread, each with different ingredients and add-ins though it generally always goes in the oven (in a tin or maybe in muffin form).

Still, what if there were another way to bake banana bread—and what if it used your slow cooker?

As it turns out, slow cookers keep proving themselves more and more useful. Here’s the perfect recipe for how to cook an easy and delicious loaf of banana bread right in your home crock pot. Ready to get started?

Here’s what you need:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of softened, cubed butter
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 bananas
  • 1 cup of chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1 cup of nuts (walnuts or pecans, optional)

Here are the steps:

1. First, get a large bowl and mix together your butter, eggs and sugar until it combines.

2. After that, throw in your baking powder, baking soda, salt and a cup of flour as well.

3. Next up, add in your last cup of flour. By this point, the mixture should have thickened up somewhat.

4. Once that part is ready, mash your bananas up in—bonus points if they’re already overripe—and throw those into the mixture too. Mix it all up!

5. At this point, you can also throw in whatever extra ingredients you might want to. In the above, we’ve suggested chocolate, nuts or even both.

6. Now that your ingredients are ready, get butter and spread a layer of it all around your crock pot. Once the pot is ready, pour in your entire mixture. Cook the entire thing for four hours on low. After enough time has elapsed, the top of the bread should be gently browned and it should be a little springy to the touch. Take it out of the crockpot and enjoy!

Although there’s no particular benefit to making your banana bread in a crock pot instead of the oven, the longer cook time may bring a different texture and feel to an old classic. Enjoy!
