People are putting a pickle in their cheap beer to improve the taste
I hate how much I love this trick.

Let’s face it. As popularized as beer has become, many don’t necessarily like the taste.

Throughout the years, different styles of beer have popped up in addition to various flavors. While some are definitely less “beer-tasting” than others, it’s still beer.

Though more and more people seem to opt for hard ciders, beer is still the most prevalent alcoholic beverage you’ll find in bars and grocery stores.

If you’re not a fan of beer but find that it’s all you’re stuck with, consider trying this trick to lessen its bite.

We’ll forewarn you, if you’re not a fan of pickles, this might not be for you either!

It seems that folks in Michigan have discovered that putting pickles in beer helps to make the drink more enjoyable because it lessens its bitterness. According to Kaitlin Gates of Simplemost, it even takes away the unpleasant aftertaste.

However, it’s important to note that this trick works best on light (cheap) beer as opposed to darker brews.

John McClure of McClure’s Pickles says that pickle “compliments the lager because of the slight vinegar and salt notes that get picked up.”

Pickle maker, Yi Wah Roberts, of Arlington, Virginia agrees.

“They’re both fermented foods and seem to have an affinity for each other. Alcohol likes big flavors and sometimes it likes the sort of acid that the pickles bring to the party,” he adds.

Perhaps the best thing about this combination is that unlike other fatty and greasy bar foods, pickles are a healthier choice.

Besides, who doesn’t love a two for one deal?

The reason that pickles pair so well with beer is the same reason people love having fries, nachos, pretzels, etc. with a can of beer — vinegar and salt just… mesh well together.

Those who turn their noses up at the idea are reminded that putting a pickle in a can of beer isn’t much different than sipping a Bloody Mary or a Gibson.

Gates tried this method by putting a Claussen pickle in Miller Lite. Her husband joined her in the experiment. Unlike her, he happens to enjoy beer. Still, he drank his entire beer with the pickle in it.

One thing that he says he noticed was that the longer the pickle was left in the beer, the more the beer took on the flavor of the pickle.

It sounds like the people who aren’t big fans of beer but love the taste of pickles just might be in luck at their next tailgating event. Truthfully, it seems like a pretty reasonable compromise.

The trend has picked up so much over the past couple of years that pickle beer is now sold in stores, bottled up and ready to go. While it sounds enticing, not everyone is a fan.

“Had it at the brewery a few months back, in my opinion it tastes too similar to drinking straight out of a pickle jar,” wrote one Reddit user.

Another user, however, was a fan of the beverage.

“It’s actually pretty good. Tastes like pickle juice, as advertised. Surprisingly not weird if you like pickles.”

Perhaps it might be better to choose the brand of the beer and the pickle yourself!

Whatever your choice, to pickle or not, is entirely up to you. But why not try something new?
