As the old saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day—and accordingly, breakfast foods are some of the best foods out there. We all have our own favorite recipes, whether we’re talking about pancakes, bacon, hash browns or eggs. Still, we probably have a particular picture of what those meals look like when they’re prepared normally: maybe eggs over easy with toast and a side of sausage. But like anything good, having it the same way too often can make things feel a little stale.
Fortunately, we’ve got a recipe today that puts a great twist on your typical breakfast fare—and it couldn’t be easier to make. And don’t worry, it still ticks off all the necessary boxes when it comes to your favorite breakfast foods. Let’s get started.
Here’s what you need:
- 2 slices of white bread
- 3 eggs
- onion
- peppers
- ham
- shredded cheese
- butter
Here’s what you do:
1. First, get your slices of bread and cut out the inside leaving just the crust outline and a little extra bread inside as well. Keep the sliced out portions of the bread to use later. In the meantime, slice up your onions, peppers and ham in a fine dice. Although we’ve listed some ingredients here to fill your omelette with, feel free to include anything you want in this step!
2. Once your ingredients are ready, throw a couple tablespoons of butter in a pan over medium-high heat. As the butter starts to sizzle, throw your ingredients in and sauté them. Keep working them around with a wooden spoon until you’ve browned them to your desired level. Once its all ready, separate it into two piles and then place one of your bread crusts around each of the piles.
3. Next, crack your eggs in a bowl and whisk them up. Add a pinch of salt and pepper as well as some shredded cheese if you’d like. Once it’s all ready, pour your egg mixture over the diced onions and into the middle of the bread slice. After everything is in place, carefully put the sliced out bread back on top and push it down slightly.
4. After the egg has had some time to cook, carefully work a spatula under the bread and egg and flip it over to cook on the other side. If done correctly, the egg will have browned slightly on the bottom and will fill the bread entirely. Let the other side cook as well before pulling it off the heat and serving!
Although this recipe uses many of the same ingredients as any normal breakfast, this is a fun way to play with the presentation. Omelettes can be notoriously difficult to make, depending on your technique. This omelette-in-the-hole version is a fun and easy alternative that should excite anybody who is tired of eating the same old thing in the morning.
As we mentioned before, this recipe is very flexible and allows you to put in whatever you want as well. If you want to add some spinach or garlic to your egg mixture as well, feel free! You can also experiment with whatever type of cheese you want in the mix. Above all, have fun with the recipe and never eat a boring breakfast again!
