Watermelons have it all – they are healthy, portable, and delicious! The toughest thing about eating a watermelon can definitely be cutting it. These melons are not easy to manage, and cutting them can be a complete hassle! Luckily, the team at Mr. Hacker is here to help. They have presented 9 original ways to cut a watermelon. Say goodbye to your watermelon stresses!
1. The Perfect Slice
To get a perfect slice of watermelon, begin by cutting the watermelon in half, standing tall-ways. Once this is done, turn each half so that the flat part is facing the cutting board, then cut in half again. Finally, set your knife into the watermelon at a 45 degree angle and cut out one more slice. Cut but don’t remove the rind. With the slice facing rind down, make vertical slits in the watermelon. There you have it, simple-to-peel slices!
2. Slice and Dice
Start out with a slice of watermelon, then cut vertical lines like you did in the last step. Once you are done with this, turn the knife and cut in lines perpendicular to the original ones, so that the fruit is diced. Cut free from the rind, and enjoy.
3. Watermelon Bars
One of the easiest ways to eat a watermelon is to cut it into bar-like rectangles. This way the rind acts like a handle. First, cut the horizontal watermelon in half. Face the flat part onto the cutting board, then chop wide-ways, with each piece about an inch thick. Turn the watermelon 90 degrees, then chop again. Next step – grab and go!
4. Party Dish
Watermelons make the perfect snack for social gatherings. This method will get your watermelon cut, into the bowl, and ready to serve in a few simple steps. With the flat surface of the watermelon half facing down, use your knife to skin the watermelon. When you are done, dice the melon like in step 2. Place a serving bowl over the watermelon dome, flip the whole thing over, and voila! With a toothpick in each cube, this dish is party-ready.
5. Watermelon Pops
Start out with your usual half of a watermelon. This time, cut two rounded lines parallel to the edges of the watermelon, so that the fruit is cut into thirds. Line toothpicks down the center of each slice, then separate the three slices from each other. Chop along each slice so that there is a toothpick in the middle of each piece. Grab by the toothpick to eat – it will be shaped like a popsicle!
6. Coin Carving
Okay, so this one may not be the cleanest way to cut a watermelon, but it might be the most fun. Take a coin and carve around the middle of the watermelon, so that there is a ring in the center of the fruit. You only need to push the coin down enough to cut through the rind. Next comes the good part: karate chop that watermelon! The whole thing will bust in half, although watermelon guts might fly everywhere. Still, this is one experience that can’t be beat.
7. Naked Watermelon
Nothing looks more awkward than a perfectly shaped, completely naked watermelon. To freak out your friends, take two watermelons. They need to be the same size for it to work. With one watermelon laying long-ways, cut the fruit in half. Take all the fruit out – you can use it for something else! With your hollowed-out rinds complete, move on to the second watermelon. Carefully carve off the rind, leaving the red part as perfect as possible. Slide your naked watermelon into the empty shell of the first fruit, and there you have it. Freaky, right?
8. Use the Tool
Did you know there is a special tool out there shaped just for your watermelon needs? It looks like a metal version of a drawing of a watermelon slice, and it works pretty well. To use it, simply cut off the bottom of your watermelon so it has a sturdy base. Stand it tall, take the tool, and press it down through the watermelon.
9. Angurello
You may be looking at that word wondering, “What is that?” It’s another watermelon tool! It looks like something you might use on seafood, but it works wonders with this melon. With the flat part of a watermelon half facing up, run the edges of this tool in lines across the watermelon. Then use the same tool to pinch the pieces like tongs. Clever, huh?
Cutting a watermelon is no easy task, but the labor is definitely worth it. These simple hacks will make digging into your watermelon a whole lot easier.
