Though a nice steak dinner is definitely delicious, we often think of these meals as a bit of a luxury. Still, the truth is that the cost of a steak-based dinner for the family can actually vary a lot depending on what kind of cut of meat you buy as well as how much of it each person gets. Maybe you’d like to have it a little more often—but not if it means everyone gets their own full filet mignon. If this sounds about right, we have the perfect recipe for you.

Although the phrase “steak and potatoes” might conjure up the image of something basic, the truth is that these things go together because they are perfect when done perfectly. Bringing it all together, today’s recipe is for garlic steak and potatoes in personal foil packs. Not only is this dish easy to prepare, it also makes clean-up a cinch and keeps costs down by giving each person their own individual serving. Feel free to use a cheaper cut of meat to make this recipe as well—no matter what you put in, it will end up tasting delicious. So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2-2 1/2 pounds of top sirloin steak, trimmed and cubed
  • 1 pound of baby yellow potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • fresh thyme or parsley (optional)
  • salt
  • pepper
  • aluminum foil

Here’s what you do:

1. To start, preheat your oven to 425 degrees (if you’re baking the foil packets, otherwise you can grill them later). In the meantime, prepare your steak and your vegetables if you haven’t done so already. On the steak, you’ll want to trim any excess fat and make sure it’s chopped into cubes that are roughly two inches large. If your potatoes are bigger than an inch, quarter or half them until they’re less than that.

2. Once your ingredients are ready, get a large mixing bowl and combine your steak, potatoes, olive oil, garlic, seasonings, salt and pepper. Toss the bowl and mix everything to make sure all the ingredients are evenly coated in seasoning.

3. Next, break out four sheets of foil that are about 12×12 inches and divide your steak and potato filling into each one. Wrap the foil up and around the ingredients and make sure they’re tightly sealed enough to keep the juices and ingredients in. Once they’re set, grill the packets over high heat for 10 minutes on each side if you’re grilling. Otherwise, bake them for 20 to 25 minutes in the oven.

4. As an added step, you can also open up the foil packets at the very end and put the steak directly on the heat of the grill or in the broiler of your oven to develop a char on it. Otherwise, when the time is up simply check that the meat is cooked to your desired level of doneness. Garnish each packet with fresh thyme or parsley and serve!

As you can see, this recipe lets you have your steak dinner without completely breaking the budget (and it also involves very little clean-up). The flavors work together perfectly and the foil pockets help the potatoes marinate in the steak fat as well. Though this basic recipe is delicious as it is, feel free to add in additional vegetables or throw in some extra garlic and spices for the marinade. Above all, enjoy the recipe and let us know how it goes!
