It might seem ridiculous to purchase an expensive steak or a piece of salmon only to throw it in your dishwasher.
But apparently, lots of people are doing it. This rather bizarre trend has even been covered by Inside Edition.
But are these dishwasher cooks onto something?
This technique is actually a variation of sous vide, a French method of cooking meat inside vacuum-sealed bags. The bag should, if sealed properly, protect the meat from any substances within the dishwasher you wouldn’t want to get on something you are going to eat.
The meat will only cook in its own juices.
While putting something in a dishwasher and then eating it does sound rather ridiculous, the meat is well protected from anything you don’t want to get on there.
Dishwashers, like ovens and microwaves, get very hot and can sustain that temperature for a long period of time. While not designed for cooking food, they can serve that purpose. Most dishwashing cycles last for 1.5 hours to 2 hours. That’s more than enough time to cook food. Just make sure the bag it’s in is firmly sealed.
The most perfectly cooked steak.
One dish cycle is said to be the perfect amount of time to cook the steak. How this was first figured out, however, is a bit of a mystery. Who was the first person to say “You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to shove my steak in the dishwasher and then eat it?”
This remains unclear.
You can cook your whole meal in the dishwasher.
This technique isn’t just good for steak and salmon, you can cook basically anything you want in there. If you don’t have a vacuum-sealed bag, then just put it in a ziplock bag. Seal it as best you can and then dip it in a pot of hot water and it’ll provide all the protection that you need.
One very important note regarding this rather bizarre cooking technique is that you should not put any soap in the dishwasher while cooking your food. Even with vacuum-sealed bags you don’t want to risk your food coming out with a soapy taste. This does mean that you can’t wash your dishes and cook your food in the same cycle.
Inside Edition covers how to cook food with your dishwasher.
“Would you consider cooking a steak in the dishwasher? It turns out many would, as lots of people are using the appliance most commonly associated with cleaning plates and glasses for cooking. Putting meat, be it steak, salmon, or another piece of protein, in an airtight bag and into the dishwasher is a variation on the French method of cooking known as sous vide, which involves cooking your food in a vacuum-sealed bag. Chef Michelle Doll showed Inside Edition how it’s done,” reads a description of Inside Edition’s video.
