Bars in Italy are pioneering the use of pasta straws to reduce plastic waste

October 18th, 2019

It’s no secret that plastic waste is a huge ecological issue, and is one of the major problems that humanity has to face on a daily basis. Many countries and organizations have been trying to avoid or outright ban the use of non-reusable plastics altogether. The European Union will even have laws in place in the coming years that should greatly avoid the use of plastics for consumers.

Not everyone is a huge fan of plastic avoiding measures, but there are some bars in Italy who are using a very creative manner to avoid using plastic straws.

Instead of using regular straws, the Italians have introduced ‘pasta straws’ as the perfect alternative.

After all, reusable metal straws are quite cold and some people find them distasteful, but there’s nobody in Italy that will say no to one of these innovative pasta straws.

The bars have even made national headlines with their solution to tackle this environmental problem, and the pasta straws are legitimately considered to be one of the best tools currently out there to combat plastic waste.

And the pasta straws have garnered quite some attention outside of Italy as well. Gran Fabio posted a picture on Reddit, which quickly went viral with over 77,000 upvotes and millions of views.

“Here in Italy, bars are starting to use pasta as straws to reduce plastic use. Our technology amazes the world another time,” he wrote as a caption.

Even though some chefs would definitely be able to create these pasta straws themselves, there’s one company in particular who has been shipping these innovative straws on a large scale: Stroodles.

According to the company, these hard straws can last up to an hour in any kind of drink and don’t give off any flavor at all – you won’t even notice you’re drinking from a piece of pasta. Pasta straws and coffee? Beer? No problem at all.

Of course, just like plastic straws, they aren’t reusable.

However, the difference is that you can just put these straws on the compost heap or the regular trash.

Getting rid of them won’t be bad for the environment at all, there’s practically no waste produced and they’re fully bio-degradable.

The founder of the company, Maxim Gelmann, hopes that his company will inspire other companies to be more innovative in the battle against climate change, even if the impacts of those other innovative products are relatively small.

“Stroodles is not just a straw company and there is a much bigger picture, as I feel I can leave a long-term impact by creating a ripple effect by triggering many small changes all across the world, especially among people that are less conscious of sustainability and their respective actions and behaviors,” Gelmann said to Bored Panda.

“Thus, Stroodles is rather a movement and an educational company and a gateway to more sustainable behaviors and thinking and the straw is just our first channel (of communication) in our mission to fight plastic waste,” he added. “We thereby want to attract and reach the less (environmentally) conscious people and show them, how easy it is to make sustainable changes and have them enter their life.”

The idea is incredibly simple, yet extremely effective.

A bio-engineered straw that is completely biodegradable, tasteless and safe to use. And unlike metal straws, these pasta straws are very cheap to produce, making them an economically interesting alternative as well. You could say it’s truly Italian engineering at its finest!
