Do you know you can make a loaf of bread just by using candles?

Survival skills are often related to the outdoors and the wilderness.

However, as city dwellers, we should also know how to make do with what we have once disaster strikes the city.

Even if we’re not outdoors, the first three things for survival are the same – shelter, water, and food.

And here’s how you can make bread just by using candles.

The ingredients are simple:

  • 450g of all-purpose flour or bread flour
  • 1-2 tbsp of dry yeast
  • 1-1.5 tsp of salt
  • 280ml of water

She also noted that if you want to use 500g of flour instead, all the ingredients must remain the same except water, which you’ll increase to 300ml.

A dutch oven

Besides tea candles, one of the most important tools for this recipe is a Dutch oven.

A Dutch oven is a heavy cast iron pot with a tight-fitting lid.

You’ll see chefs and TV personalities cook stew in these pots but what is so special about this?

It’s an all-around cooking tool. Its greatest aspect is that it can retain heat so it can become a makeshift oven.

First, let’s make the dough.

In a large bowl, combine your dry ingredients, namely flour, yeast, and salt. Mix them thoroughly until they integrate well.

Pour in your water and stir the mixture. Knead it by hand as soon as it gets to the consistency that allows it to be kneaded.

Let your dough rest.

Cover the bowl with a saran wrap and place it in a warm place.

Once it doubles in size, remove the plastic cover then fold the dough in on itself with a spatula.

Transfer your dough to a cake pan.

Don’t forget to dust the base with some flour so it won’t stick.

Let it rest some more until it rises again.

Next, we’ll assemble the oven.

Place a metal rack inside your Dutch oven or any material that can withstand heat and prevent your baking pan from being directly in contact with the oven.

This gap will ensure that the whole bread will be enveloped in heat.

Next, arrange your seven tea candles in a circle.

Leave a little bit of space between the candles.

Using some bowls as stands, place a wire rack over the candles and put your Dutch oven on it.

Let it bake for three hours.

During this time, it is crucial and important that you do not lift the lid of the Dutch oven even if you just want to check how the bread is going.

Once you open the lid, the heat that you trapped will escape.

After three hours, remove the bread from the pan and turn it upside down.

Put it back in the Dutch oven and continue baking for another hour. Slice and serve.
