School talent shows are made so that students can have an exhale from the academic part of learning. This type of event at school showcases the raw and young talents of kids, oftentimes, talents they do not know they possess.
It is one way of developing not only the students’ talents but also to boost their self-esteem, especially when students feel like they do not excel academically.
It also makes them more involved in school activities, such as this and many others, and will also make them interact with more people within the schools’ vicinity.
But more than all these benefits school talent shows have, it is sometimes the surprise of finding rare and great talents. Just like this young boy in the video.
He performs one of Michael Jackson’s best hits- ‘Billie Jean.’
He was just an 11-year-old young boy, Brett Nichols, a school goer at Walnut Elementary School. The video was taken back in 2009 during their simple talent show where he’s set to wow the crowd with a “King of Pop” classic.
The song “Billie Jean” was released as the second single from Jackson’s sixth studio album, Thriller back in 1982. It’s definitely one of his greatest hits that racked up multiple awards and topped the Billboard charts for quite a period of time.

“Billie Jean” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart within three weeks, and became Jackson’s fastest-rising number one single since “ABC”, “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There” in 1970, all of which he recorded as a member of the Jackson 5. It remained at number one for nine weeks on the chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 2 song for 1983. “Billie Jean” is certified 6× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).”
With over 10 million copies sold worldwide, this song was one of the best-selling singles of all-time. The song didn’t just conquer the US but also the UK, France, Switzerland, and Belgium. “Billie Jean” was one of the best-selling singles of 1983, making Thriller the best-selling album of all-time, and Jackson’s best-selling solo single.
Can a young boy like Brett do this song justice?
The answer is YES! This young fella right here is ready to set the stage on fire with his moves. As he walks to the center of the stage, you immediately see a glow of excitement coming from him. Though from afar, you can sense that he is also nervous.
He’s wearing black pants, black shoes paired with white socks, a white shirt, and of course, the trademark Jackson glove and fedora hat. This kid is definitely into it, and we can’t wait to see his performance.
Can a school goer of his age really pull this off?
The pressure is always there whenever someone tries to do a Michael Jackson song.
When talking about some prestigious awards a song can have, “Billi Jean” was awarded the following …
“…two Grammy Awards and an American Music Award. In a list compiled by Rolling Stone and MTV in 2000, the song was ranked as the sixth greatest pop song since 1963. In 2004, Rolling Stone placed it at number 58 on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. Frequently listed in magazine polls of the best songs ever made, “Billie Jean” was named the greatest dance record of all time by BBC Radio 2 listeners.”
Worry not, because Brett is about to channel his inner Michael Jackson.
As the beat of the music starts, so does this young boy. He begins by bopping along with the famous beat of the song’s intro. Then just seconds after, he starts to show his slick moves and fancy footwork, just like the “King of Pop” but the Brett Nichols version.
When we thought he was just going to dance to the music, shockingly, he grabs the mic and does the unexpected!
He’s lip-syncing the song, all the while dancing lively and bouncing from left to right. It’s such great showmanship from an 11-year-old boy like him.
And this kid can also do the famous moonwalk.
Of course, nobody should miss this part, every “Billi Jean” performance should have it, and this boy killed it! He’s so smooth that it almost looked like he’s gliding on melting butter.
Actually, Brett rose to stardom because of “Billie Jean”.
Six years ago, he won a high school talent show by performing the same song. The video of his performance racked up over 22.2 million views on YouTube.
Because of his viral video, he made it to local and national TV channels. He was also credited by Billboard magazine for bringing the song back on the charts, how does that sound? This man is really amazing!
