Ready-made meats are the number one “no-no” on the list.

Yeah, the sweet people behind the counter put in all the effort to cook and marinate this ready-to-cook meat, but it may not have been the best option for the meat.

However, the butcher advises:

“Pick out your meat option (look for something on sale!) and then ask your butcher what [their] favorite seasoning or marinade is that they sell in the store.”

The meat that has already been marinated could have been over marinated, resulting in mushy meat.

While it might seem like a smart idea to save time by buying pre-made kebabs instead of cutting up vegetables for your kebabs, this butcher says that 60 percent markup is never justified.

Instead, request your butcher to cube the meat for you.

Then, customize your homemade kabobs with a wider variety of vegetables, such as mushrooms, pineapple, and cherry tomatoes.

Unfortunately, the butcher also advised against purchasing filet.

That seems surprising because the filet is one of the best cuts of beef available. According to the butcher, it’s an overrated cut of meat, with a high price to match.

It is recommended to get a cut like teres major, which is also a lean and tender cut but costs around a third as much.

When it comes to poultry, it’s best to stay away from “water chilled” chicken.

“It absorbs some of the water which evaporates when cooking, resulting in smaller and potentially-rubbery chicken.”

Look for chicken that is labeled “air-chilled.” Also, if there isn’t a sticker, it’s safe to say it has been water chilled.

Also, check for chicken that says “no antibiotics.”

Not only the standard “no added hormones,” which is already mandated by the United States Department of Agriculture.

“And make sure to look for the USDA Organic label, which means the chickens were not genetically engineered.”
