Whenever you shop for fruit at the grocery store or supermarket, you will notice they all come with a sticker attached to them. These stickers usually denote where the fruit is from, but there’s more to it than just that.
For starters, the stickers on these fruit are edible. Yes, you can eat them! While these stickers won’t choke you, they certainly are not tasty, and I would not recommend eating them for the sake of eating them.
Furthermore, each sticker label comes with a four digit code. While this may resemble a locker combination, these numbers provide meaning behind the fruit itself. For instance, if the first number of the four digit code is a 3 or 4, then the fruit was conventionally grown, and it may contain pesticides. If it’s a five-digit and the first number is a 9, then it is organic. If the first number is an 8, then it is a genetically modified food.
More importantly, the number on a fruit is the same throughout the USA regardless of its manufacturer or grower.
There’s a wide variety of labels and numbers for fruit. Have you tried all of them yet?
Not all fruits will reach the consumer as a sticker. For instance, new farmers in China are attaching letter-shaped stickers on their fruit while growing. When it’s time to harvest, they remove the stickers, leaving a message imprinted on the skin.
These apples can cost upwards of $100 because they are special and rare!
Some people have started collecting fruit labels. One such collector is Barry Snyder, who is also an artist. He uses fruit stickers to create beautiful works of art! People all around the world send him their unwanted stickers and labels.
They are currently working on stickers that come off with water. This will help remove these stickers more easily when you clean the fruit. I can’t wait for this to happen!
