With spring here and summer just around the corner, most of us can’t wait to get outside and start having backyard parties. Summertime is the perfect time to fire up the grill, invite some friends over, fill up a baby pool and crack an ice cold beer. As important as good food is to a fun grill out, it’s also nothing without some good drinks to go along with it. And sometimes you want to have some kind of special party favor to take the entire event a little more memorable.
Fortunately, we have the perfect thing that checks off all these boxes. Everyone loves watermelon in the summer, so why not make a watermelon keg to dispense summer cocktails to all your party guests? This food hack is a great party trick that will have all your neighbors talking.
Here’s what you need:
- a watermelon
- a power drill
- a tap
- one egg beater
- one bottle of rose wine (750ml)
- 1 1/2 cup of orange vodka
Here’s what you do:
1. First, cut a slice off the bottom of your watermelon without cutting into the actual flesh so that the watermelon will stand on its end. On the other side, use a sharp knife to cut a lid off the top of the watermelon like you would when carving a pumpkin.
2. With the watermelon ready, make a simple immersion blender of your own by using a power drill and an egg beater! Simply put the egg beater in the power drill and tighten it in so it doesn’t move. Place the watermelon in the sink so that it doesn’t spill everywhere and gently drill into the end with the lid (after removing the lid). Gradually puree the insides moving the drill outward but without puncturing the sides. Pour the pureed juice into another bowl or container—it should yield about six to seven cups.
3. After the watermelon is completely hollowed out, cut a tiny round hole in the bottom of it that matches the end of your tap—but make sure to do it snugly so that it doesn’t leak! Once it’s mounted, screw the backside in and make sure that it’s tight.
4. Once the tap has been mounted, pour the juice back into it after straining it. Pour in your alcohol as well and stir it all up. After everything is prepared, put your watermelon back in the fridge with the juice inside and let it get nice and cold. Chill it for at least two hours before serving and enjoy!
As you can see, this creative party trick couldn’t be easier. Although the power drill hack is a fun one, you can also accomplish the same thing if you actually own an immersion blender as well. If you don’t want to go through any of that effort, you can also slice out the insides with a knife and a spoon and then blend the remains.
Although the alcohol mixture we’ve listed here works well, feel free to create your own watermelon-infused cocktail that suits your needs! Finally, you can also add in a bag of ice to your watermelon cocktail mid-party to make sure everything stays nice and cold. Have fun!
