Do you like to go out to eat instead of cooking dinner at home? If so, what’s your favorite food to order? Although everyone has their own favorites in that category, sometimes we lean towards cuisines that seem harder to recreate ourselves at home. Chinese food is one of those kinds where we’re not sure where to start when it comes to making it ourselves. While there are definitely some dishes that you’ll need to go outside of your home to get, we have one today that will get you started at least.

Today’s recipe is a slow cooker version of chicken teriyaki which is super simple and tastes just as delicious as something you’d eat at a restaurant. Slow cookers truly can do it all, can’t they?

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts (chopped)
  • 3/4 cups of low-sodium soy sauce
  • 3/4 cups of brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup of rice vinegar
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 3/4 teaspoons of ground ginger
  • 4 teaspoons of cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup of warm water
  • 1/4 cup of finely chopped green onions

Here’s what you do:

1. First, throw your chopped chicken into the bottom of your slow cooker. In the meantime, whisk your soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, ginger and garlic together in a bowl. Once your sauce is well-combined, pour it over your chicken.

2. Next, set your slow cooker on low for four to five hours and let the mixture cook together.

3. When it’s done, take the chicken out. While your slow cooker is still warm, get a side bowl and mix together your cornstarch and warm water. Once that mixture is smooth, slowly pour it into your slow cooker and keep stirring the entire time you add to make a thick sauce.

4. Finally, throw your chicken back in the slow cooker and stir it all up to coat it in the teriyaki sauce. Once everything is all done, make some rice and serve with some sliced green onions on top!

As always, this slow cooker recipe is simple enough to make and tastes just as good as something you might order at a restaurant. Though the teriyaki chicken goes well with white rice, you can also mix it in with brown rice or even some noodles if you’d rather. The green onions are optional as well, though they do go very well with many different Chinese dishes.

With this recipe in mind, the idea behind bringing this all together can also be extended to making other dishes from your favorite restaurants. The base mixture of garlic, soy sauce and other mix-ins can be applied for other flavors with chicken or beef in the slow cooker. Once the first step is done, repeat the step of mixing cornstarch and water into the remains to make a sauce that will thicken up. Above all, have fun with it and tell us what you think.
