We all lead such busy lives that finding the time to slave away at the stove creating a top-quality flavorsome meal is near-impossible.

But if you know anything about food, you’ll know that certain dishes can only taste their best when they’ve been left to stew, roast or marinate for as long as possible.

Enter: slow cookers.

While this genius cooking equipment has only really taken off in the 2000s, it was actually invented before most of us were born, in 1940.

Slow cookers were the brainchild of Irving Nachumsohn, who invented the crock-pot to cook a specific type of Jewish stew known as cholent.

His idea came from the clever habits of his Jewish family and friends, who, to get around the problem of being forbidden to cook on Sabbath, took pots of stew to the local bakery to cook slowly in the residual heat from the ovens the day before. Not technically classed as “cooking”, so they got away with it!

Over 80 years later, and slow cookers are a big part of our lives nowadays.

There are so many delicious recipes to sample, but if you haven’t tried it already, you need to make time for this slow cooker pork chops and onions dish from The Magical Slow Cooker.

You just need a slow cooker that’s designed to hold 3 quarts or more, plus some basic freezer and storecupboard ingredients.

You will need:

  • 2 lb. boneless pork chops
  • Cooking oil
  • 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 1 large sweet yellow onion sliced
  • 1/3 cup salted butter sliced

Method:

1. Start by putting a skillet on the stovetop on medium-high heat. When the pan has had time to heat up, add cooking oil to cover the whole of the base of the pan.

Cook the pork chops until they’re brown on both sides – you don’t need to cook through, as your slow cooker will do that. Remove from the heat and set aside for the time being.

2. Next, add your Worcester sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to your slow cooker.

If you’re a fan of spice, you may want to be a bit more liberal with the pepper. You could also add your own favorite spices and seasonings to the suggested list, too.

3. Use a whisk to stir your ingredients together, being careful not to scratch the surface of your slow cooker. Then add the browned pork chops, along with the chopped onions and slices of butter.

4. Now for the hard part: the waiting! Cover the crockpot with the lid and cook the dish on your lowest setting for 6 hours. It’s best to be patient here – and you shouldn’t open the lid while the dish cooks.

5. When the time has passed, remove the lid from the crockpot and serve your dish immediately, either as it is or with couscous, rice, beans, bread or dumplings.

And there you have it: delicious, flavorful slow cooker pork chops and onions.

The great thing about this recipe, like the majority of crock-pot recipes, is that it required virtually no work. The hardest thing you have to do is brown the meat.
