Although we all have our standby dinner dishes, seafood can be a bit of an acquired taste. While it’s hard to beat a buttery lobster roll or a freshly caught filet of fish, not everybody is immediately onboard with seafood right away. While the fishy taste isn’t for everybody, having the right recipe can make all the difference in these cases. For anyone who is on the fence about having seafood for dinner, we’ve got a recipe today that might change your mind about that.
Today, we’re going to make some delicious and crispy shrimp cakes with lemon aioli on the side. Although shrimp is a relatively mild-tasting form of seafood as it is, the way it’s mixed into this crispy cakes with a perfect dipping sauce makes it all so much better. If you have any family members that you’re trying to ease into eating shrimp, this is definitely a good recipe to make to accomplish that goal. So let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Shrimp Cakes:
- 1 pound of raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 4 ounces of mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup of mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons of finely chopped parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
- 1/8 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/4 cup of flour
- 2 tablespoons of light olive oil
Lemon Aioli:
- 1/2 cup of mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon of lemon zest
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 1 minced or pressed garlic clove
Here’s what you do:
1. To get started, prepare your shrimp by patting them dry with paper towels and removing any excess or unwanted parts. When that’s done, start chopping them up into small, pea-sized chunks.
2. Once that’s done, move your shrimp into a big mixing bowl and add your shredded mozzarella, egg, mayonnaise, parsley, salt and pepper. Stir everything together until it’s well-combined before adding your flour as well, stirring once more so that everything turns creamy.
3. With your cake batter ready, get out a non-stick pan and set it to cook over medium heat. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the pan and spoon in your shrimp cakes one large tablespoon at a time, flattening each one down as you go until they’re only about a half-inch thick. Cook each patty for about three minutes on each side until they turn golden brown before setting them aside on paper towels.
4. With the cakes done, you can make your lemon aioli sauce as well. Get out a small bowl and add your mayonnaise and add your lemon zest, lemon juice and pressed garlic. Stir everything up until it’s as smooth as possible and you’re ready to serve!
Though you may never have prepared shrimp quite like this before, we promise that the end result is going to be a hit with the whole family. Though it still has the uniquely light and juicy flavor of shrimp, the added seasonings and the crust on the outside makes all the flavors so much richer. And of course, the aioli dip is the cherry on top of an already delicious recipe. Once you’ve given this recipe a try, feel free to experiment with the ingredients as you see fit—otherwise, have fun with this and let us know how it all turns out!
