How often do you and your family have steak for dinner? Although it’s hard to beat a perfectly-cooked slice of meat for dinner, making it all the time can be a little expensive. Regardless, steak is typically seen as a refined meal, one best set aside for special occasions. Still, there are other ways to make dishes like this that are more comfort-food oriented—and we’re going to show you one of them today.

That’s right, today we’re going to make a delicious Salisbury steak skillet that your whole family is sure to love. If you’ve never had this dish in a restaurant before, Salisbury steak is a delicious recipe where the steak comes smothered in a mushroom gravy that tastes rich and savory. Even though this recipe results in a restaurant quality meal, it’s actually very easy to make right at home. So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Steak:

  • 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
  • 1/2 cup of seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 1 lightly beaten egg
  • 1 tablespoon of onion flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of oil

Gravy:

  • 1 cup of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 2 cups of beef stock
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper

Here’s what you do:

1. Before anything else, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. With that done, get out a large bowl and throw in your ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion flakes, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix everything up until it’s well combined before dividing your meat mixture into four separate patties. Roll each one into a ball and press down to make it into a patty.

2. Next, get out a skillet over medium-high heat and add some cooking oil. Drop your patties in the skillet and brown them on both sides, setting them aside when they’re done. In the same pan, turn the heat down and add butter, onions and mushrooms, seasoning it all with a pinch of salt and pepper.

3. Cook the onions and mushrooms for three to five minutes, or for long enough for everything to get soft and tender. After that, add in your flour and stir it in for two minutes or so until it begins to form a roux. Add beef stock as well and stir it all well before bringing the mixture up to a boil.

4. Once it boils, turn the heat down to a simmer and add your beef patties back into the pan. Finally, take the whole skillet and throw it in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the beef is cooked all the way through.
