There are certain foods and activities that just go perfectly with the summer time. Filling up a kiddie pool and lounging in it is always a great activity. Going to the public pool and bringing the kids is another treat. Perhaps most beloved of all, backyard cookouts are a true summer staple, particularly when it comes to grilling up burgers and hot dogs. Along with these main dishes, though, one fruit is associated with summertime perhaps more than any other. If you haven’t guessed yet, we’re talking about watermelon.

Although a nice cold slice of watermelon can be great on a summer day, many of us don’t actually know the best way to prepare one of these things for easy eating. Although we all have our own methods, this one is sure to make your life a little easier when it comes to serving watermelon. So without any further ado, here’s the perfect way to chop up watermelon for easy eating.

1. Before anything else, make sure you have a big knife which is relatively sharp to make your life easier. Take your watermelon and cut it in half.

2. Next, get a cutting board or another clean surface and turn one of your watermelon halves over with the cut side down. If you need to adjust the cut so that it lays flat, do that before continuing.

3. When it’s secure, use your knife again to make parallel cuts longways across the watermelon, starting from the edge and moving across. Make each one of your cuts about one to two inches apart.

4. Once you’ve gone all the way across in one direction, turn the watermelon half 90 degrees and repeat that cutting process in that direction. When done correctly, the result should be a series of cross cuts resulting in watermelon “squares” of various sizes. Be careful to hold the slices together with your hand while you cut!

5. After you’ve done that, repeat the same steps with the other half of the watermelon as well. At the end of it all, you can leave your watermelon halves on a plate without moving it into a bowl or breaking it up. This way, people can pull out individual pieces, Jenga-style!

Although there’s many different ways to prepare this fruit for a barbecue, this is a fun and simple way to cut it into many little pieces so that there are enough pieces to serve a large party. As an added bonus, the final presentation is a little more fun and interesting than the usual thick wedges of watermelon you may be used to!

While the process we outlined is pretty straightforward, there’s still a few things to pay attention to throughout the process. Be sure to use a sharp knife and a flat surface when cutting up your watermelon. Similarly, make sure you get a nice straight line when cutting your watermelon in half so that it lies flat for the other steps. Be sure to go slowly when you’re cutting and twisting it and you should be good to go. Do you have your own way of cutting watermelon?
