When it comes to fruit snacks that we might enjoy throughout the day, we’re probably either eating apples or oranges. While you can bite into an apple relatively easily (once you’ve washed it, let’s say), oranges require a little bit of work to peel. We all can probably get the job done somehow, but let’s face it: we often don’t have a bulletproof way to peel our oranges without either making a mess or still having some of the whitish rind sticking to the pulp.
No matter what your method, we have a trick for you today to help make the orange peeling process just a little bit easier. If you follow these steps correctly, you should have a cleanly peeled orange in no time at all. So let’s get started.
1. First, take your orange in your hand. Using a butter knife (or another not-too-sharp knife), carefully cut a circle around the middle of your orange. Rather than cutting it from stem to pit, cut a circumference between these two points—make sure to only go about an eighth of an inch in.
2. Once you’ve made your initial cut all the way around, push the tip of your knife under the rind of the top half of the orange and gently pry on it to ease the skin away from the pulp of the fruit. Do this all the way around until you get more room, sliding the entire blade inside and twisting the orange around it.
3. After step two, you should be able to cleanly pull off the entire top of your orange rind! For the bottom half, do the exact same thing on the bottom and keep twisting until it pops off cleanly as well.
4. If you’ve done the above steps correctly, you should have a completely clean orange in your hands and two perfectly clean rinds to set it back in, should you wish. As a bonus final step, you can also pull the top and bottom “plugs” of the white rind out of the fruit and use your knife to slice down one of the sections. This way, you can unroll the good part of the fruit like an accordion!
While peeling an orange is already not the most difficult thing in the world, many of us still don’t really know how to do it efficiently or effectively. Most of the time, we start picking away at the outside until we have dozens of pieces of little orange skin littering the counter and the floor of our kitchen. Fortunately, this method is an easy way to simplify the whole process.
As an added bonus, you may even be able to come up with a creative use for the completely cleaned out orange halves that you have left as well! You could always slice them and spritz them over some nice whiskey cocktails. On the other hand, you could get more creative and use them as a temporary serving dish for some kind of fruity dessert pudding. We leave it up to you. In any event, tell your friends about this simple food trick!
