Although most of the best family recipes tend to get passed down throughout the years, some are still bound to slip through the cracks. Every so often, it pays to go back to the generations before us to see what kind of culinary knowledge they have to pass on. If you can think back to trips to your grandparents’ house, you probably remember seeing their old cookbooks stuffed full of printed out recipes or of old cookie tins containing similar hidden knowledge. The recipe we have for you today is a little bit like that as well.

Let’s face it: cookies are one of the most accessible and delicious desserts that there is. They’re simple to make, they’re incredibly satisfying and they can represent virtually any combination of flavors that your heart desires. Today, however, we’re going with a special and time-tested recipe for pecan cookie balls that are simple to make and super delicious. All you need is a little bit of prep time and very few ingredients. So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of softened butter
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of chopped pecans
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar (optional)

Here’s what you do:

1. Before getting started, make sure to preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Have a baking sheet handy as well and spray it down with non-stick spray or a sheet of parchment paper.

2. After that, get out a medium bowl and mix together your flour, butter, sugar and pecans. Mash everything together with a fork until it forms a kind of rough dough. When everything has come together, roll the dough into small one-inch balls and put them all on your baking sheet.

4. When they’re done, fill a Ziploc bag with powdered sugar and drop your cookies into it. Zip the bag up tightly and give it a good shake to make sure all the cookies get evenly coated. Once that’s over, you’re ready to eat!

Although making homemade dough for pies and cookies can sometimes be a pretty cumbersome process, this one is anything but. All you need to do is throw your ingredients together in a bowl, mix it all up, scoop it onto a sheet and bake for a delicious little treat that should take you back in time to being a little kid again.

While the core recipe we’ve listed above is tried and true, always remember that you can add your own flair however you see fit. If you like a cookie with a little more kick, maybe consider adding some nutmeg or cinnamon into the dough mixture to spice things up a notch. You could even throw in some other nut combinations for a slightly different flavor. Above all, have fun with the process and let us know how it goes!
