Apple pie has come to be a something of a symbol of American life. If you’re anything like me, your family probably had its own recipe that got passed down throughout the years, from generation to generation. Although approaches may differ, a standard apple pie typically has a thin crust on the bottom, plenty of gooey, cinnamon-y apple filling and perhaps a lattice-work crust on top as well. It certainly takes skill to keep the inside juicy, not too sweet and in nice contrast with the crust.

But we’re betting you’ve never had an apple pie like the one in today’s recipe.

As we said before, pies typically come presented with the crust on top (even if there’s a thin layer on the bottom—since there doesn’t have to be). This pie adds a few ingredients to spice up the standard apple pie mixture and flips the whole thing upside-down for a gooey and delicious recipe the entire family will love.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 container of refrigerated pie crust
  • 1 tsp flour
  • 6 peeled and sliced apples
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 9-inch pie tin or plate

Here’s what you have to do:

1. First, get your oven preheated at 375 degrees and start preparing your ingredients. In your pie plate, dump your pecans, brown sugar and butter in the bottom. Mix the ingredients together and cover the bottom of the pan.

2. Throw a bottom layer of pie crust over the mixture in your pan. Press the crust down evenly all around the sides and sprinkle the top of it with a teaspoon of flour.

3. Next, make sure your apples are peeled and chopped. Then, get a big mixing bowl and combine your apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix all of the ingredients together and pour those into your pie tin as well.

4. With everything combined in the same tray, throw on the other layer of pie crust and flute it around the edges to make it look presentable. Cut four or five slits in the top of it as well so that steam can escape while it’s cooking. Finally, throw your pie on a cookie sheet and bake it in the oven for 40 to 50 minutes or until the crust turns a golden brown.

5. After that, take your pie out of the oven and let it cool off on a wire rack for about five minutes. Once that’s done, get a serving plate and put it on top of your pie. Finally, carefully invert the pie tin so the pie comes out upside down on the plate. Let it cool off for an hour and you’re ready to serve and enjoy!

If done correctly, this pie will be a gooey and self-glazing treat for the entire family! Although apple pie is a familiar favorite, the added step of candied pecans is a delicious twist that everyone can behind. Once you’ve tried this one out a few times, adapt this recipe as you wish to make it all your own!
