When you go to make a cake, chances are you do what the rest of us do and get a box of mix from the store and follow the instructions. Still, it can be fun to get in the kitchen and start experimenting with different kinds of baked goods that you may not have had before. Anyone familiar with Paula Deen may know about her Ooey Gooey Butter Cake recipe—like all her recipes, it tastes delicious even if you don’t want to look at the calorie content. Still, we’ve found a similar butter cake recipe that is even sweeter and more decadent than Deen’s!

Today, we’re taking it back in time to the 1950s with this recipe for a simple and classic butter cake. Still, be prepared: nothing about this cake is healthy but it will definitely satisfy even the meanest sweet tooth.

Here’s what you’re going to need:

  • 1 package of yellow cake mix
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 1 package of cream cheese (eight ounces)
  • 4 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1 9 x 3-inch round cake pan (or a 9 x 13-inch rectangle pan)
  • stand mixer

Here’s what you do:

1. Before anything else, set your oven to preheat at 350 degrees. If you have a convection oven, you may need to set it slightly lower at around 325.

2. In a side bowl, throw in your cake mix, two eggs, one teaspoon vanilla and one stick of melted butter. Mix everything together with a fork until it’s all evenly incorporated. This portion of the recipe will make the actual cake part!

3. Get your cake pan and spray it down with baking spray to grease it. If you don’t have butter or baking spray, line it with a piece of parchment paper instead.

4. With your pan ready, press your cake mixture into the bottom of the pan and make sure it lays as flat as possible. After this part is done, you’re ready to make the filling!

5. In your stand mixer bowl, throw in your cream cheese, two more eggs, one teaspoon of vanilla and one stick of melted butter. Beat the mixture on a medium speed until the entire thing is creamy.

6. After that, incorporate your powdered sugar one cup at a time with your stand mixer on a low speed. Keep repeating this process until everything is combined.

7. Pour the filling into the cake pan on top of your cake layer. Once your oven is warmed up, bake your cake for 35 to 45 minutes.

8. Try to err on the side of caution with your cook time! Ideally, your cake will be done when the edges are brown but the center is still a little bit jiggly. Overcooking it will take the gooeyness out of it! When it’s done, let it cool for a while and serve!

If you’ve been looking for a recipe to take you back in time (or one that will blow your family away with how delicious it is), this recipe is sure to do the trick. Although the ingredients used are pretty simple, everything blends together to make something truly delicious and sweet. If you want to experiment with this recipe, maybe consider adding some chocolate powder to the mix or top the whole thing off with a little bit of powdered sugar for presentation!

Although this cake is pretty addictive, don’t make it too often or leave it lying around the house. Unfortunately, things that are delicious and things that are healthy don’t often go hand in hand.
