If you live in a home that’s been in your family for a while (or you’ve accrued a lot of knick-knacks and hand-me-downs), chances are there’s some hidden surprises in there waiting for you. Maybe a family heirloom you haven’t seen since childhood is sitting around in a cardboard box somewhere. On the other hand, when it comes to the kitchen, there might be an old cookie tin sitting around with a bunch of secret family recipes in it.

Even if you aren’t lucky enough to find a treasure trove of these recipes in your own home, the recipe we have today should make up for it. This recipe is for a delicious dessert that seemingly came out of an old recipe tin and has stood the test of generations. That’s right, today we’re working on a good, old-fashioned recipe for delicious cheesecake that will make your mouth water—just like grandma used to make. So let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

The Crust:

  • 40 vanilla wafers, crushed
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter

The Filling:

  • 2 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract

The Topping:

  • 1 pint of sour cream
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Here’s what you do:

1. First, make sure your oven is preheating to 375 degrees. After you’ve done that, get a nine-inch pan or pie tin and make sure it’s greased and ready. Once your equipment is ready, get a medium bowl and throw in your crushed vanilla wafers, sugar and butter and beat them all together until well-combined. Press that mixture into the bottom of your cake tin.

2. When your oven is hot enough, throw the tin in and let the crust bake for about eight minutes. After enough time has passed, pull it out and set it on a wire rack to cool off while continuing with the rest of the recipe.

3. Get another bowl and combine your cream cheese, sugar, vanilla and eggs. Beat those together until they’re smooth, preferably with an electric mixer. Pour the results into your cookie crust.

4. After you’ve poured everything in, bake it for 20 minutes. Take it out once the time has passed and make sure the center has set. Finally, set the entire thing aside to cool for about 15 minutes while you make your topping!

5. Next, get another bowl and mix together your sour cream, sugar and vanilla. Mix them together well and then spread that over your cheesecake once it has cooled off. Finally, raise your oven’s temperature to 475 and once it’s ready, bake your cheesecake once more for 10 minutes.

6. After it’s done, let it cool for about 10 minutes before running a knife along the edges to separate it from the pan. Refrigerate the cheesecake overnight and serve the next day!
