Are you a foodie? Do you enjoy experimenting with your palate? Every year we come across some kind of new trend in cooking or with the food we consume, in general. Some years ago, there were the frying insects, last year there were the edible flowers. So, what’s the new trend in food so far for 2020?
Well, this one might not seem as weird or yucky as eating fried cockroaches for dinner but it is definitely a novelty. How would you feel about a grilled suflower head and serving it like you would a regular corn on the cob?
The Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company based in Mansfield, Missouri, explains how easy and simple the whole cooking process really is. You only need choose the right sunflower. So, what constitutes the “right” one? They explain that you have to wait until all the seeds have formed but still have soft shells.
Then you need to remove all the flower petals and coat the sunflower head with oil and then place it face down on the grill or BBQ.
It has to be left on the fire for around 5 minutes and then carefully removed and coated again in sun-dried tomatoes and sprinkled with fresh herbs, such as basil.
It’s undoubtedly an ideal snack for vegetarians and vegans who always look for new and interesting recipes to vary their diet. Until now, sunflowers have been popular for their seeds as they are rich in nutrients, such as healthy fats and several vitamins and minerals.
The video (below) was posted on the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company’s Facebook page and right after they were bombarded with an influx of comments by many people who were positively surprised and curious about the whole cooking process and consumption of the sunflower head.
There were more than 2,000 comments on their page, where a huge debate soon started about the consumption of the sunflower heads. One of the questions posed was if the whole head tasted similarly to the sunflower seeds which people usually eat. The Company answered to this question by saying that “They’re nutty tasting, but still tender like corn when harvested while immature.”
The majority of the comments were positive and supportive. One wrote,“Well knock me over with a feather!! I had no idea!!”, while another, “Next time I grow them, I’ll pick it green before the squirrels get them and we can try this!!!”.
It’s obvious that this new food trend is gaining more and more admirers who are feeling adventurous enough to experiment with this. However, there were a few that remained dubious about the whole idea.
It is amazing the amount of creativity and imagination that can be brought in the kitchen. New food trends open the doors to new experiences and tastes that definitely make us more adventurous and inspired amidst our daily routines!
