With the cold weather beginning to frost your windshields and whisk away the leaves, it’s time to give yourself the sense of comfort you deserve. We’ve unpacked this amazing mulled wine recipe for the season whether your looking to surprise your dinner guests or cozy up to a warm blanket and a good movie.

Prep time: 20 min

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 large saucepan

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 lime
  • 200 g caster sugar
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 whole nutmeg , for grating
  • 1 vanilla pod
  • 6 star anise
  • 2 bottles Chianti or other Italian red wine

Instructions:

  1. Add your sugar to the saucepan.
  2. Over the pan, peel off large sections from the lemon, lime, and orange. Give your peels a nice twist and drop them in. We prefer using a speed-peeler for this process which you can check out here.
  3. Give your orange a nice squeeze, adding some extra juice to your mixture.
  4. Grab your vanilla pod, slice it down the middle length-wise and smooth your knife over it, scraping out the seeds inside. Add the seeds and the pod to the saucepan.
  5. Throw in your cloves and crack your cinnamon stick in half, adding it to the saucepan. Finely grate one whole nutmeg into your mixture and add the star anise.
  6. Pour in half a bottle of red wine and put on medium heat.
  7. Once the sugar dissolves, bring the heat up to high and bring to a boil. This will give you a thick syrup.
  8. Add in the last half of the first bottle of wine and another whole bottle into the saucepan. Let this simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.
  9. Take it off the heat and serve.

If you’re feeling extra spicy, add in 100ml of your favorite spiced rum!
