Have you ever tried Mongolian barbecue? We know, it might sound a little unusual—but if you live in the midwest, you may have even been to the Mongolian BBQ fast-casual chain where you’ll have had some experience with the food. For those who don’t know, it typically consists of some barbecued meat slices served with a marinade, spices, peppers and other vegetables, all on a bed of rice. It’s definitely very delicious and is usually a dish you’d have to go to a restaurant for. Until now, that is!
Today, we’re going to show you how to make this delicious dish right at home. If you’re thinking that the recipe is going to be complicated or difficult, fear not: you can make the entire thing right in your slow cooker! This recipe for slow cooker Mongolian beef is definitely going to be in regular rotation in your household once you try it. So let’s get started.
Here’s what you need:
- 2 pounds of thinly sliced flank steak
- 3 tablespoons of cornstarch
- 1/4 cup of canola oil
- 1/2 cup of soy sauce
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons of sambal chili sauce
- 3 tablespoons of minced garlic
- 1 thinly sliced onion
- 1 thinly sliced green bell pepper
- 1 thinly sliced red bell pepper
- 1/2 cup of sliced green onions
- white rice
Here’s what you do:
1. First, get a big mixing bowl and start preparing your flank steak. Once it’s all sliced up, throw it in the bowl with the cornstarch. Toss the bowl around to make sure all the meat gets evenly coated in the powder.
2. Once the meat is ready, get a large wok or a sauce pan and set it over medium high heat. Add in your canola oil and wait for it to get hot. After that, throw in your beef and fry it for four minutes, or until it turns golden brown. If your pan is too small and you have a lot to fry, you can do this step in batches as well.
3. After you’ve fried the meat, get a medium mixing bowl and pour in your soy sauce, brown sugar, water, hoisin sauce, sambal and garlic. If you can’t find sambal, try looking at your local grocery store under the Asian foods section or go to a speciality store.
4. Throw your fried beef into your slow cooker and add in your yellow onions and bell peppers. Finally, throw your soy sauce mix on top of the beef and mix everything together so it’s evenly coated. Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for five hours.
5. About 20 minutes before your food is set to be done, start making some white rice as well according the instructions on the package! After the time is up, open the slow cooker and make sure the meat is well cooked and everything smells delicious. If everything looks good, throw your beef mix over rice and garnish it with green onions!
As you can see, this recipe is super simple and results in a tangy and slightly spicy dish that pairs perfectly with some fresh and fluffy rice. Although the recipe above is relatively mild, if you’re a fan of spice you could even add in some Thai peppers in addition to your bell peppers! If you want those peppers to have a little more crunch, you can also add them into the mix after four hours in the slow cooker rather than at the beginning. Above all, enjoy this recipe and let us know how it goes!
