It’s ridiculously simple to make.
Many of us are used to complicated recipes involving dozens of steps and fancy terminology. However, Mississippi pot roast isn’t anything like that. Basically, you just throw everything in the slow cooker and let it run for the afternoon. By suppertime, it will be ready to enjoy.
You’ll need a roast, butter, au jus gravy mix, ranch dressing mix, and pepperoncini peppers.
Select whatever packet of au jus gravy mix that you can find. For the ranch dressing mix, one popular brand is Hidden Valley. You want to make sure to use the dry powder kind of mix too, not actual dressing. We want to be clear about that.
Every family does it slightly differently too.
Apparently, Mississippi pot roast first came into existence when a resident from Ripley, Mississippi named Robin Chapman added it to her church’s cookbook. This was back in the 1990s.
Ever since then, the recipe has evolved and been adapted by thousands of different families. It’s been adjusted to work with whatever cut of meat you have on hand and whatever seasonings you would like. However, the five basic ingredients have never changed.

Once you gather everything, just toss it all in the slow cooker and set it to cook on low heat.
It will likely take around 8 to 10 hours of cooking to get the roast to the perfect level of tenderness. The smells will fill up your home as you pass the time, but after a long day of patiently waiting, it will be ready to enjoy.
Maybe you can even post a picture of your Mississippi pot roast on Reddit when you’re done too. It seems like that’s what everyone else we know has been doing lately. Why not join in on all of the fun?
