Do you ever feel like the rest of the world knows so many cooking tricks and you don’t know any of them? I, personally, feel like that all the time and the cooking struggle is real. Many cooking tips and cooking DIY projects are overly complicated and I give up before I even try. So, I have compiled 35 easy but total life and time saving cooking tips that will make you more efficient in the kitchen. They will also make you a better cook, take a look!
1. Perfect Rice Hack
When you cook rice, does it come out mushy and one giant blob of rice? An easy way to combat this problem and create the perfect rice, is by adding in a kitchen towel. Stay with me, I promise. When cooking rice on a stovetop and the rice starts to boil over the water’s edge, turn the heat to low and cover the pot with a kitchen towel and put the lid back on. Make sure to wrap the towel’s edges above the lid and cook for another ten minutes. The moisture will soak into the towel and not back onto the rice!
2. Hard Butter Struggles
Spreading hard butter can ruin many pieces of toast. The butter does not spread and can even break soft pieces of toast. An easy way to make your hard butter into soft butter, a grater. Grate the butter stick, like you would a block of cheese, and the smaller pieces of butter will spread softly and melt perfectly into your bread.
3. Baking Bacon
If you want all your pieces of bacon to come out equally crispy, bake your bacon instead of frying it. This will leave behind all the splattering grease problems and is way easier. Preheat your oven at 400 degrees. Line your bacon on a cookie sheet, covered in foil, and put it in the oven. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes for chewy bacon and 30 to 35 minutes for crispy bacon, depending on your preference.
4. Frozen Wine Cubes
It is never a good feeling to throw away leftover wine. A great way to use every drop is by freezing the leftover wine in an ice tray. The wine ice cubes can be used in the future for any recipe that needs a cooking wine. Perfect!
5. Fresh Avocado
Avocado’s brown very quickly. There are many different methods on the best way to keep avocados fresh. One that has been tested and found to work is by cutting the avocado in half and taking out the pit. Then, cut a piece of onion and put the onion and remaining avocado together in a Ziploc, or plastic wrap, and placing it in the fridge. This will keep your avocados from browning as fast as normal.
6. Broken Egg Shells
Everyone has accidentally broken an egg and gotten small shell pieces into their batter or food mix. An easy way to get those shell pieces out is by getting your fingers wet with water. You will be able to grab the broken shell pieces much easier.
7. Juicy Lemons and Limes
There is nothing worse than needing a lemon or lime for a recipe and yours have lost all their juice. Here is a tried and true way to keep your lemons and limes juicy for up to a month! Keep the lemons or limes in a jar that can be sealed, but fill it up with water first. Put the closed jar of water and lemons or limes into your refrigerator. Viola, longer lasting lemons and limes
8. Fresh Eggs?
Are you unsure if your eggs are still fresh or not? All you have to do is fill a cup, or jar, full of water. If the egg floats, then the egg is not fresh anymore. If the egg sinks to the bottom, you have yourself a fresh egg. Quick and easy.
9. Corn off the Cob
Corn is delicious, but de-corning an ear of corn can be a pain. All you need is a bundt pan to make it much easier. Place the ear of corn on the center of the pan and cut the corn into the bundt pan. Once it is all de-corned, you can collect the corn kernels much simpler too.
10. All Egg Whites
When a recipe calls for only egg whites, it can be a major hassle to separate the yolks out of the egg whites, until you learn this simple method. Crack however many eggs you need into one bowl and grab yourself an empty water bottle. Place the top of the water bottle onto an egg yolk and squeeze. The moment you release the squeeze, the suction will pull only the yolk into the bottle.
11. Peeling Eggs
Hard boiled eggs are delicious but it can be difficult to peel the egg shells off. Stop using your fingers and it will be much easier. What do I mean? One by one place the hard boiled egg, with its shell a bit cracked, into a closed jar with water. Then shake the jar up and the egg will peel itself, so much easier.
12. Freezer Burn
It is never fun to open up your pint of ice cream and find it has major freezer burn. If you thought there was no way to fight the freezer burn, you will find yourself happily wrong. As you eat the pint of ice cream, keep cutting the container down too. This will keep less air in the container and fight off the freezer burn. The lid will keep fitting on the ice cream container too.
13. Frozen Herbs and Olive Oil
This trick is perfect for being able to quickly have herbs and olive oil ready to cook with. Grab an ice cube tray and pick certain chopped herbs to put in every cube. Fill the cubes with olive oil and freeze. These cubes are perfect for fast but tasty cooking.
14. Juicy Oranges
Everyone should want to get the most juice as they can out of their oranges. A great tip is putting your unpeeled oranges in the microwave for 20 seconds and then letting them cool for another 60 seconds. Once you squeeze the oranges yourself, or with a juicer, your oranges should produce more juice.
15. DIY Cooking Spray
If you have ran out of cooking spray and in a pinch or just do not want to pay for cooking spray, this simple DIY project is for you. In a bottle spray, add one part oil and five parts water. Shake it up and your homemade cooking spray is ready to use.
16. Baked Hard-Boiled Eggs
If you are not wanting to stand by a stovetop to cook hard-boiled eggs, there is another way without boiling. Hard-boiled without boiling, who would have thought! Preheat your oven to 325 degrees and grab a muffin tin. Place one egg into each muffin hole and cook the eggs for 30 minutes. Take the eggs out and place them in cold water to stop them from continuing to cook. Remember tip number 11, from earlier, to peel those eggs much easier.
17. Garlicky Fingers
Garlic is delicious but the smell of garlic sure does linger, especially on your fingers from peeling it. If you are over the smell of garlic on your fingers, grab two bowls and your garlic! Place all the unpeeled garlic cloves into one bowl and cover it with the second bowl. Shake these bowls and the garlic for twenty seconds. This will have taken off many layers of the garlic already. Place the garlic cloves onto a plate and microwave for thirty seconds. This will make the remaining layers fall right off of the garlic gloves and your hands will not stink of garlic.
18. Air Tight
There is no need to keep pressing onto zip lock bags to try and get the air out because some air will always remain. Instead, place a straw into the bag and seal the bag up to the straw. Push the air out of the zip lock bag through the straw and then close it tight.
19. Meal Prepping Smoothies
It would seem as if meal prepping smoothies would not work, but it can by not fulling making them just yet. The best homemade smoothies have a bit of fruits and vegetables. If you know you are going to have a busy week and need an easy smoothie on the go, start your meal prep. Grab the number of zip lock bags for as many smoothies you plan on making. Create each smoothie an individual zip lock by adding all the ingredients and then place each bag in the freezer. This way, in the mornings, all you have to do is blend the smoothie and you will be good to go.
20. Fries Minus Oil
Are you craving fries but trying to stay away from oil? This recipe is perfect for you! Cut the potatoes into wedges, size of your choice, and bring them to a boil, in water, for five minutes on the stovetop. Drain the water but place the fries back into the pot. Add any spices of your choosing and one tablespoon of flour. Cover the pot and shake it all up. Set the oven at 425 degrees and place your fries onto a baking sheet. Cook the fries in the oven for about twenty minutes and you will have crispy fries without needing the oil.
21. Plastic Wrap Struggles
Plastic wrap is a necessary item in ever kitchen, but the struggle to control using plastic wrap can be real. An easy method to gain better control over the sticky plastic wrap is by keeping it in the freezer of fridge. You will be able to get what you need but it wont be sticky anymore. So, to make it stick, get the edges of the plastic wrap a bit wet and it will be sticky once more.
22. Browning Sliced Fruit
Moms, more than anyone, know that the freshness of sliced fruit starts quickly ticking the moment it is cut. A great way to keep it fresher longer is by keeping the sliced fruit in honey water. Put two tablespoons of honey into one cup of water and mix well. Let the sliced fruit soak in the honey water for a few minutes. This should keep the sliced fruit from browning for 24 hours.
23. Fresh Bananas
The browning of bananas has a lot to do with the stem of the banana. Therefore, by separating a banana from its bunch and placing foil over the stem will keep a banana fresh for a longer period of time. Super simple and makes a huge difference.
24. Seeds and Ice Cream Scoops
You might never have guessed to use a small ice cream scoop to deseed fruits or vegetables but it is a great trick. A small ice cream scoop will get those seeds out in easy scoops. Try it the next time you need to remove seeds from a zucchini, squash or pumpkin.
25. Homemade Buttermilk
If you are feeling a bit in the need of a new, but easy, kitchen DIY, then this homemade buttermilk is a perfect project. All you need is two ingredients: one cup of milk and one tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix the lemon juice into the milk and let it sit for two minutes. After the two minutes, the mixture can be used for any recipe that calls for buttermilk
26. No More Stale Bread
Throwing away bread that has gone stale can hurt, such a waste. Here is a trick that will revive the stale bread back to its original softness. Wet the bread with water and make sure the entire loaf gets wets, but not soaked. Wrap the wet bread in foil and bake it for 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Take the foil off of the bread and bake it again for five minutes at 350 degrees. This will revive the softness from a previously stale bread loaf.
27. Leftover Pizza
The debate over which type of pizza is better: fresh pizza and leftover pizza will forever rage on. If you are not a fan of leftover pizza maybe try this trick and see if your mind will change. When you microwave your pizza, put a glass of water in the microwave too. This will keep more moisture in the microwave and will not dry the pizza’s crust.
28. Cherry Tomatoes
Slicing cherry tomatoes can be time consuming and nerve wracking on your finger tips. A great method, and much quicker method, is by using two plastic lid containers. Place as many cheery tomatoes that can fit between the two lid containers. Hold the top lid with one hand, to keep everything in place, and using a serrated knife cut the cherry tomatoes in half.
29. Cheese is Grating
Grating cheese can be very messy and let’s not even talk about cleaning a cheese grater, ouch. Instead of creating a cheesy mess, try this cheese grating method. Freeze your cheese for twenty minutes before grating and spray your cheese grater with nonstick spray. The frozen cheese will not crumble as much and the sprayed grater will have that cheese sliding right off. No mess, no fuss.
30. Homemade Frozen Pancakes
Breakfast needs to be a quick meal for many people. So, meal prepping can be a necessary to get a yummy breakfast in. Try creating your own frozen pancakes to get in that sweet breakfast. Cook pancakes however you usually do, but line the pancakes up on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer until the pancakes are frozen. Move the pancakes until a zip lock bag and make sure to date it and place back into the freezer. The pancakes will be good up to two months!
31. Grilling Fish
The next time you grill fish, grill the fish on top of lemon slices. The lemon will not only add a nice flavor but will prevent the fish from sticking to the grill. This is a double bonus!
32. Soft Brown Sugar
The longer you have a case of brown sugar, the harder it will get. An easy remedy to make your brown sugar soft is by keeping a piece of bread within the brown sugar. It really is that simple, just don’t forget to switch out the slice of bread every so often.
33. Strawberries and Straws
Hulling strawberries has never been easier than with a straw. A straw is the perfect size tool. Push the straw from the bottom of the strawberry straight through the middle and the top will pop out with the straw, like I said, it’s never been easier.
34. Makeshift Rolling Pin
Planning on learning to bake but forgot to buy a rolling pin? No problem, just use a wine bottle. A wine bottle will roll out any dough you need flattened. It is also a great reason to bring out the wine bottle and drink it after rolling!
35. Mayo in Thirty Seconds
Ran out of mayo but did not realize before making a sandwich? If you have an immersion blender than here is a homemade mayo recipe you can whip up in thirty seconds. All you need is one egg and one cup of olive oil, both need to be room temperature. Add the egg and oil together in a jar and blend with your immersion blender until it creates the consistency of mayo. Viola, your homemade mayo is ready.
