Have you ever had Grape-Nuts cereal? Despite its unusual sounding name, the cereal doesn’t have any grapes or nuts in it—instead, it’s made of wheat and barley with some glucose flavoring. Though there are different possible explanations behind the origin of the name, one of which being that the little pieces in the cereal resembled grape seeds or “grape nuts.” Regardless, we’re not talking about this cereal for no reason. We only bring it up because you need it to make the delicious dessert recipe we have in store for you today.
This recipe is another throwback that you’d be more likely to find in an old recipe tin somewhere. For those who want a little bit of creaminess with their crunch, this grape nuts custard dessert is sure to do the trick. The flavor is absolutely delicious and the added cereal gives it just a little more texture than you might be used to from a dish like this otherwise. IF nothing else, this will be a blast from the past—this recipe has been around since 1901! So let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 slightly beaten eggs
- 1/3 cup of Grape-Nuts cereal
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
- 1/8 teaspoon of salt
Here’s what you do:
1. Before anything else, preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Once that’s set, you’ll also need to prepare your milk by scalding it for the recipe. To do this, pour your milk in a pot and put it over medium-high heat. Bring your milk almost all the way to a boil before turning the heat off and cooling it down. When all that is set, get a medium bowl and mix together your eggs, sugar and salt. Add in your scaled milk gradually until everything is well combined.
2. Next, add in your vanilla and your Grape-Nuts cereal, stirring everything up until it’s well incorporated. Once the mix is set, pour it all into an eight-by-eight inch baking dish. After that, pour about two inches worth of hot water into a large roasting pan and put the baking dish inside it. Ideally, your hot water will come up about halfway around the outside of the baking dish.
3. When your oven is heated, throw the entire thing in the oven and bake it for 40 to 50 minutes. To check to make sure it’s done, do a toothpick or a knife test on the custard at the end and make sure it comes out clean. If it’s ready, serve it plain or with whipped cream (or Cool-Whip)!
Although this recipe uses a few cooking techniques you might not be as used to, it’s still relatively simple and easy enough for anyone to do at home. The custard recipe itself is delicious and the cereal adds a little something extra to the whole thing.
While there’s not a ton of room for variation in this recipe, you could always throw some fruit chunks into the custard mixture if it suits you! Besides, any recipe that has lasted this long and is still popular must be doing something right, right? Above all, enjoy the process and happy eating!
