For anyone who is a fan of European cuisine in general, French onion soup is generally considered as a delicacy. Each sip tastes rich and sweet, full of caramelized onion flavor, fat and cheesiness as well. Because the flavors are so full and complex, it typically takes a long time to make and can be expensive if you order at a restaurant. But what if you could make it at home yourself?
As it turns out, making this delicious meal at home is not as difficult as you may have thought. You guessed it—we’re making slow cooker French onion soup today. Just the like the restaurant version, this recipe is full of rich flavor and plenty of cheese. Still, the actual recipe is incredibly easy to throw together and only needs a little bit of preparation. When you get home, you’ll have an amazing stew waiting for you. So let’s get started.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 4 onions, sliced
- 9 ounces of sliced gruyere cheese
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 2 quarts of beef broth
- 1/4 cup of sherry
- 1 cup of croutons
- 2 sprigs of fresh thyme
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt
- pepper
Here’s what you do:
1. Before anything else, start by peeling your onions and roughly chopping them up into slices. When you’re ready, throw your onions, butter, sugar and salt into the slow cooker. For the first stage of the recipe, set your slow cooker on high and let it cook for seven hours.
2. At the end of that process, open up the slow cooker and make sure that the onions are soft and brown. Next, add your beef broth, sherry, thyme sprigs and pepper as well. Once you’ve done that, cover the slow cooker up again and set it to cook on high for another hour.
3. When that last hour is over, open the slow cooker again and ladle the soup into bowls. Top each bowl with a layer of croutons and a slice of Gruyere cheese and you’re ready to eat!
As you can see, the process of making this soup couldn’t be simpler and requires only a little bit of prep work. Although you’ll need to do an additional step when you get home from work to finish the soup off, the process is absolutely worth it. While the steps we’ve listed say to spoon the soup into bowls before adding the croutons and cheese, you can also do that step in the slow cooker as well. If so, add all your ingredients and let it cook for another 15 minutes on high at the end to melt the cheese.
On the other hand, there’s another way to take the presentation of this dish to another level as well. If you’re really craving an authentic French onion soup with piping hot cheese, you can spoon your soup into ramekins or heatproof containers, top them with bread and cheese and then pop them in your broiler. Although you’ll have to wait for the containers to cool, the end result will be a perfectly cheesy bowl of soup. However you do it, have fun with this recipe and let us know what you think!
