Assuming you’ve acquired the taste for fish (raw fish, specifically), there’s a pretty good chance that you love sushi. Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish which includes vinegared rice, seafood, vegetables and sometimes tropical fruits. When done correctly, sushi has a clean and complex taste—it can be both sweet and salty, more specifically striking a unique savory taste called umami. Most of us consider sushi a delicacy or a food that needs to be prepared only by an expert. Still, eating out all the time can get expensive.
Fortunately, there’s a cheap and easy way to make a variety of your own sushi rolls, right at home.
What You’ll Need:
Sushi Rice:
- rice vinegar
- sushi rice
- sesame seeds (white and black)
Avocado Crab Rolls:
- avocado
- crab (or imitation crab)
Salmon Rolls:
- salmon slices
- cream cheese
Tuna Rolls:
- tuna slices
- chives
Shrimp Rolls:
- shrimp
- mayonnaise
Equipment:
- mixing bowl
- vegetable/fruit peeler
- ice tray
- plastic wrap
- kitchen scissors
What To Do:
1. First, prepare your sushi rice by boiling in water according to the instructions on whatever bag of rice you purchase. Once it’s ready, transfer it to the mixing bowl (and make sure it has time to cool).
2. Add in rice vinegar to your sushi rice appropriate to the amount you made. For three cups of uncooked rice, use a half cup of rice vinegar. After that, throw in a handful of white and black sesame seeds and stir it all together.
3. Next, get your giant ice cube tray and cover it in a layer of plastic wrap. Make sure to use enough plastic that you can push the plastic down into each ice cube spot without tearing it.
4. Next, prepare each individual roll!
For the avocado crab rolls, use your vegetable peeler to peel thin slices of avocado. Lay two of these thin slices down in the ice tray in a cross formation. After that, place a piece of crab or imitation crab inside.
For the salmon rolls, lay down a slice of salmon and put a dollop of cream cheese on top!
For the tuna rolls, use the kitchen scissors to slice up some chives into the bottom of the tray and put a slice of tuna on top.
Finally, the shrimp rolls get one shrimp in each hole with a little dollop of mayonnaise on top.
5. After all your rolls are in place, scoop out a little bit of sushi rice for each hole and pack it gently on top of your other ingredients. Once it’s all prepared, throw it in the fridge for 30 minutes.
6. Once that’s done, bring the ice cube tray out and flip it carefully over onto a serving surface. Pull the tray gently off the plastic wrap and then gently peel the plastic wrap off of your dainty sushi rolls. Serve these at a party as an easy way to impress your guests!
