Don't buy special spice blends in store. Here's how to make them right at home

Ever look at the ingredients list on store bought spice blends? There may be some things you don’t recognize or can’t pronounce. Making your own spice blends at home will save you money, and will ensure that they are free of chemicals and artificial ingredients.

Here are eight recipes for our favorite DIY spice blends.

Curry Powder

Want to take those homemade french fries up a notch? Sprinkle some curry powder on them for a kick.

  • 3 tsp. turmeric
  • 2 tsp. coriander
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp. dried mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

Chili Seasoning

Don’t disrespect your beans with store bought seasoning. Do your chili right and make the seasoning yourself.

  • 1/2 cup chili powder
  • ¼ cup garlic powder
  • 3 tbsp. onion powder
  • ¼ cup oregano
  • 2 tbsp. paprika
  • ¼ cup cumin
  • 1 tbsp. thyme

Ranch Dressing Mix

This… this with some sour cream on EVERYTHING.

  • ½ cup dried parsley
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 4 tbsp. onion flakes
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • ½ tsp. cayenne pepper

Barbecue Rub

Vegetarians aside, no one ever says no to some ribs. Here’s a recipe for the perfect barbecue rub to slather on them the next time you throw them on the grill.

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup paprika
  • 1 tbsp. ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp. onion powder

Seasoned Salt

Why use salt to get you to eat your veggies when you can use seasoned salt? We don’t know… that’s why we use seasoned salt.

Lemon Pepper

You can toss lemon pepper on just about anything like salads, soups, chicken, or fish.

Italian Seasoning

Make the best salad dressing or marinade out of anyone you know by adding some olive oil and vinegar to this Italian seasoning. Or sprinkle it on some chicken or fish.

  • ¼ cup dried basil
  • 2 tbsp. dried thyme
  • 2 tbsp. dried marjoram
  • 2 tbsp. dried rosemary
  • 2 tbsp. dried oregano
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp. dried coriander
  • 1 tsp. sugar

Pumpkin Spice Mix
